What's happening with Apple laptops? WWDC? New updated models? P-M processors?

I'm thinking of either a Dell 700m or an Apple laptop. This would be for a traveling business pc for primarily email, Internet and word processing. So much is happening lately with Apple. First their new OS and some posts about some WWDC that will somehow reflect on some new updates to the iBook or PB. Then there's the switch to Intel processors.
What's up with this?
Maybe I should just look into the Dell?

Will, per apple's road map...intel apple laptop's will be more than a year in coming. How much more than a year...I couldn't say.

That said, Apple will be supporting the powerpc platform for at least 5 years after the first intel apple units arrive on the scene.

I happen to be selling my powerbook, if you are in the market.

I personally wish I could keep it but my research group, and, most importantly, my advisor all run windows so I have to go windows for the present.

My powerbook is about 8 months old but I bought applecare for it so it's under warranty until sept 2007.

Specs:

15.4" screen
G4 1.5 GHz
1.25 GB mem
80GB 5400 rpm HDD
128 MB VRAM upgrade on the radeon 9700
superdrive
etc.

Laptop has one scratch on the outside of case and one very, very tiny dent
LCD has no dead pixels (as far as I can see)

-I can also throw in my nice booq carry case ($50 new)
-legit copies Virtual pc 7 (full retail) and win98 2nd edition -- about a $200 value
-microsoft office 2003 academic -- about a $100 value

I'm looking to get about $2200 obo for the whole package

If you have the $$$ for an Apple, and are also considering a Dell(hell), :) -- then you should also look at ThinkPad-much better then Dell, Service is in U.S. for North American customers, and build quality and durability surpasses the Dells.

WWDC went by with no new major hardware announced.

I would expect to see X86 Powerbooks/Powermacs in the next year, perhaps Q1 2006. HOWEVER: expect a LOT Of kinks to come up with the first generation of new chips. I'd wait until at least a couple years down the line to buy any Intel-based Mac, honestly.

That's why I put off buying the PC and just bit the bullet for a Powerbook 15".

If you want a Mac there is a fairly large used market out there - you could check FS/T or:

http://forums.macnn.com/
http://forums.macrumors.com/

They both have classifieds sections where you could potentially score a good deal.

Not sure here.

I would think that Apple probably only does a 64 bit release of MacOS for x86.

The Pentium-Ms are not 64 bits and they already have the build for 32 bit PPC.

So laptops with x86 are probably out until AMD sells chips to Apple :D

I don't think so. The first x86 mac to be released are supposed to be the Mac Mini, iBook, and PowerBook.

BTW, when are they going to update the iBook? It's well overdue!

New version of the G4 coming in the fall. Has a faster fsb (finally!) and about a 25% mhz boost.

Probably good to get one of those, because by the time the bugs are ironed out of the first batch of P-M iBooks and Powerbooks, it will be the following fall, and so the G4 can be flogged for a P-M.
