What's Golds Gym run a month, and is it worth it?

I tried looking it up, but the golds gym website doesn't have prices. Also appears to be franchised out, so prices may vary by location. Anywhoo, I'm looking for an approximate monthly price here, baring any special group discounts and things like that that a normal joe schmuck doesn't have access to. I'd like to know a rough price so when I go in there tomorrow to possibly sign up, I don't look a deer caught in the headlights when the person working the desk blurts out a price 🙂

The one in my area is brand spanking new. I ain't got a clue what's there. I'm sure we've got some golds gym members in here. Are you happy with your memberships?

The closest "Y" is over 35 minutes away. The golds Gym is less than 10 minutes.

I've looked into some other places in the area, but the equipment is pretty shoddy and the places are just dirty. I'll pay a little more, but I just don't want to walk in there and have them tell me that it's going to run me $100 or something like that a month.

I know that my company doesn't have a corporate discount. We sell fast food and donuts. Fitness isn't a top priority 😀

All joking aside, I'm very good friends with the benefits administrator and I know that we have nothing of the like set up. But it does give me something to try and shoot for though 🙂

Two of my friends were able to get a "2 for 1" special at a local Gold's Gym. Have any friends/family/co-workers that are interested in signing up?

when i interned a couple years ago I got a coupon for 2 weeks free with them as part of signing my apartment lease...went there, seemed like a nice place, but it was super expensive- about ~$100/month for a silver package and ~$175 or so for a gold that added some personal training. Too rich for my blood.

Gyms in my area I hear cost around $50/month which is pretty darn ludicrous since an equal gym in my old city in Canada was about $35/month (CAN!). Thankfully my apartment complex has a surprisingly well outfitted gym.

Go workout VI, and in time you can have rippling man-pecs like Skoorb.

$100-$175 a month! Ouch. Too rich for this cheap bastards blood too! 😱

visgf works out at the university's VERY nicely equipped sports center for $60 a semester. It's a steal for the amount and quality of machines and equipment available. Unfortunately, since I'm not an employee or a student, It would run me about $250 for 3 months of access. So it's really expensive for outsiders to use.

I used to work out at the local rec center for $1 a pop, so max that it would cost me would be $31 a month if I went every day of the week. But, it is way to small for the number of people trying to use it. They could triple the number of benches and machines and I'd still have to wait in line for some things. No thanks.

Like I said earlier, I checked into some local, non-franchiesed fitness centers and they were pretty scuzy and the equipment was very sub-par. They wanted like $35 a month for access.

The alternative is to go out and drop $2300 for the ellipse machine I want, and another $400 for a decent bench and set of free weights. I also give up a spare bedroom to house the equipment and have to deal with moving it all whenever we move out. It would end up costing me close to $3,000 for a very basic amount of equipment that I really would like to have.

That $3,000 can really pay for SEVERAL months worth of fitness club access. I can swing $50 a month. Any more than that, and I think you're simply paying for an ID badge and the ability to brag about being a member of the newest trendy fitness club.

Bah!

pics? 😉😀😀

My gym was 35 or so a month but cheaper if you did 6 months or a year at a time. I did two 6 month memberships then I took a year at $240 which seemed like a super deal till just over a month later I showed up and there was a sheriff notice on the door shutting it down. Out $240 and no other good one close.

Which model did you have in mind? I thought about doing this as well.
My gym costs me $81/month.... New York Sports Club

If you have:
1) Enough room in your house &
2) A knowledge that you KNOW you won't quit

Then buy your own stuff. When I buy a house I'm going to specifically set aside a room for a gym. I absolutely love the proximity in my apartment building and I can't wait to have one within my own house.

Mister T, I'm looking at the Precor 5.17. It's the bottom end of the Precor lineup. It basically lacks the workout programs and a few extra levels of incline over the higher models.

I've tried out $400, $700, and $1200 ellipse machines from competing brands, but none of them can match the Precors for the smoothness, sturdiness, and variable settings that the Precors provide. They're ass expensive, but I don't really think they are ripping you off.

Skoorb, if I had the money, I'd buy my own equipment in a heartbeat. It's just hard to let myself blow 3k on exercise equipment when the two of us are living on 1.25 incomes 🙁. Right now I think it would be much more fiscally responsible to do a $50 a month thing.
I'd much prefer just walking down to the basement and hitting the weights when I got out of bed and had it out of the way before I went to work, but I just don't know if I can swing it right now.

If my taxes work out in my favor(claiming home mortgage and student loan interest) then I might have a little more cash to throw around and can reconsider.

Nice choice... Precor is definitely the way to go. The only thing holding me back is space. I don't currently have a big enough place to have a machine like that.

I have personally used both the Precor 544 and newer 546. The 546 kicks @ss. Have you been able to compare their commercial models, like the 546, to the "home models"? I wonder if there is a big difference.

What's your motivation for joining Golds Gym? Are you looking to burn extra fat, build muscle, or both? That Precor thing looks like it's pretty much made for cardio (it "works" your whole body but you're not going to be ripped like Aaahnold or gain a lot of muscle by using that) Regarding membership fees, I'm not sure, but now would be the best time to join. (Gym membership rates are usually lowest around the beginning of the year since everyone makes the commitment to go get in shape) If you wanted to purchase your own little "gym" per se, a good weight bench with lat tower, leg developer, bench with various incline/decline degrees, and mini squat tower would run around $250-350, weight set about $50. (a little more if you want an Olympic set) I'd stay away from those machine weight all-in-ones if you do purchase your own stuff because machine weights can and will never be as effective as free weights. (Although it does allow for stricter form for the beginner)

I've only putzed around on the 5.17 and the 5.21i home user models. I liked the 5.21 because the arm rails were more comfortable for me over the 5.17. The Precors were actually one of the main reasons that I wanted to gain access to a fitness club like Golds. I know that they would have a pretty good lineup of them there for me to use. I've got a nagging injury in the arch of my foot that never wants to go away, so I need to stick to low impact training. Exercise bikes don't do much for me, and stair steppers put too much stress on my arch. The ellipse machines are the way to go.

I haven't had a chance to use any of the commercial Precors. Looking forward to trying one though 🙂

RagingBITCH, Ellipse machine for cardio, endurance, and leg strengthening. Free weights for muscle toning, increasing my metabolism, and increasing muscle strength.

I'm not looking to bulk up, just to increase cardiovascular fitness, up my metabolism, and just get a decent cut to me. I used to be in excellent shape, but since I graduated from college almost two years ago, I got in a slump and never really had the motivation(or time really) to dedicate myself.

I'm finally streamlining my job enough that I have the time and energy to start working out now. At 24 years old, my metabolism is already starting to drop like a rock. I need to kick start it again.

I turned 24 two days ago and mine has been sinking hard and fast for a couple years now as well! In the past as long as I was weight training I could pretty well eat what I wanted and now I have to watch calories closely to keep things where I want them.

Oh, I try and do as much weight training as I can with dumbells. I go more for form and balance than I do for huge amounts of weight. Dumbells are also a lot easier on my wrists too.

My wife was paying $35/month at the local Gold's. She wasn't getting any fitter and seemed to be upset when I pointed out that the $35/mth didn't cut it and she actually needed to attend the gym and workout for it to have any effect. 🙂
