Whats going on with my 6600GT?

My xfx non extreme 6600GT is running at 300MHZ gpu and 1ghz memory speed at default. Its a clean install of drivers and everything.(was new rig) When I go and let it pick an optimal overclock is goes to 535mhz and 1.13GHZ on the memory. Anyone know why the default is so low? Kind of wierd it underclocked it by 200mhz.

300mhz is probably the 2d clock speed. 500mhz only kicks in when you start a 3d application like a game. Not sure this is what it is but i've read other posts with similar questions and this was what people have said.

In 2D mode it's 300 MHz. In 3D mode it kicks up to 500 MHz (or your overclocked settings). I believe there are some other threads about this, you may want to try a search for more info on this topic.

As stated... that is the 2D mode speed of the 6600GT (I have one too).

If you were to install the Coolbits registry hack to unlock the speed tab in your NVidia drivers, you'll notice that the 2D and 3D speeds are 300MHz and 500MHz respectively.

ok thanks

I did not even install coolbits and the speed tab was unlocked. (maybe I did and I am having a blonde moment) I could have sworn I went into the manual overclock block selected the 3d option(saw 300mhz) and then did the detect optimal setting option. I will double check when I get home.
