ITS PURE BLISS.

I can't really answer your question, as Freespace 2 is the only game of that genre I've played, but its really good (I think most people agree). You should try it.

Never played Imperium Galactica.

Freespace 2 is a space flight sim (i.e. dogfighting like X-wing vs Tie fighter). I really enjoyed it until I got stuck at one point during a stealth mission. Now I want to go back and play it again. Gotta find my disc.

It's a legal free download last I checked. Never played Imperium Galactica, but it deserves the hype it get. As for easy to play, there are difficulty levels. Very easy is easy. Easy is actually somewhat challenging, medium is enough for me. On hard I kept getting about 75% of the way through missions before getting blown out of the sky. :p I think I'll try "insane" just for shits and giggles.

Yup, agreed. It definitely deserves a playthrough. One of the best space sim games.

It isn't free, and never was. Get it off of gog.com for 6 bucks. Then get the OpenFreespace high rez and graphics mod. It's a great game, and looks really good. As far as I can tell, it's nothing like Imperium Galactica. It's a space sim like Wing Commander, not a strategy game.

Freespace 2 is pure awesomeness. Do what Jesusthewererabbit said. Hell, get Freespace 1, mod it using the updated resolution packs and play both ! Easily one of the best, most intense and amazing stories told in computer gaming history (at least for me :p). It's really epic. You will get so many "HOLY SHIIIT" moments immediately followed by "HOOOOOLLLYYYY SHIIIIIIIIT!!!", it's incredible :D

Take the best storyline with good graphics (a 1999? game that would not look so out of place on todays shelves) and meld that together with fantastic gameplay...

Then you have an idea of what Freespace 2 is like. It is by a mile better than anything in its class though I entered PC gaming in 1996 so missed X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter etc. and it deserves a spot on my Top 10 games of all time.... perhaps my favourite game of all time.

If you do not finish the game and want cry when you realise there is not a Freespace 3 and probably never will be, then you are not worthy of calling yourself a PC gamer. :)

I completed Freespace once or twice but completed Freespace 2 numerious times because it's such great fun. I agree with Elcs in that I too wish there was a Freespace 3 because I would buy it and if my PC wasn't fast enough to play it I would upgrade my PC! ;)

it is no less than the pinnacle of space sim to date. the story, atmosphere and game play is just epic. even the graphics wouldn't look bad today. you really should play 1 also to get the most out of it. that was also excellent (2 is just better).

it's too bad that the genre is now dead.

The engine is open source now, but the game itself is not freeware.

It's on my to-buy list from GoG.com -- I played the demo way back when and it looked like a fun arcade space combat game.

To start, I tried my dangdest to figure out how to link to a specific post in another thread but couldn't. If anybody knows this I'll gladly edit this post instead of quoting myself (whichever is considered better forum etiquette). That said I definitely recommend giving Freespace 2 a go. You don't even need to buy FS1, just get FS2 off gog.com like DaveSimmons suggested, update and go. The following was my own super-mini howto:

Freespace 1 and 2 are definitely not abandonware/free. Only the sourcecode was made available, the game data (graphics, movies, etc) were not. To play you still need to purchase a copy of the originals. Freespace 1 is also not abandonware, but the missions themselves have been ported to use the FS2 engine and data (similar to a mod) which kind of sidesteps that issue.

Once you have a working Freespace 2 install, the easiest enhancement is through the "Freespace Open Installer". Essentially it simplifies tracking down a host of improvements and addons to the base FS2 engine. Just install FS2, update if necessary and run the exe at fsoinstaller.com. That includes the improved engine with updated maps/models to utilize the new features. It also provides "Freespace Port", which is the Freespace 1 mission ported to the updated fsopen engine, and "Silent Threat: Reborn", an updated (many would say improved) version of the original "Silent Threat" FS1 addon.

WARNING: the fsoinstaller downloads ~3.5GB

To play the mods like "Freespace Port" use the fsopen "Launcher.exe" installed in the base directory. Do "Select Mod", then select the "fsport" folder in the base install directory. That will even change the startup movie so you'll get the complete storyline.

(Disclaimer: I'm quite literally just going through the fsoinstaller process for the first time as I write this, I apologize if I've left anything out.)

Thanks for sharing that. I just purchased the game and am downloading now. I definatly want to to load it up with the best mods on my first play-through.

I've always loved space sims.. the weird thing is though is that I've only ever played 2. (tachyon the fringe and freelancer) I prefer the joystick control of tachyon over freelancer's mouse control. I have the Saitek X52 flightsim control system that I can't wait to use for freespace.

The hardest part of these games is going through the tutorials to find what controls do what then going back and forth through the control menu setting up the joystick.

One of the greatest games ever created. If you can, you should even try the first one and its expansion (Silent Threat). The story begins in the first two, and continues with the second. Unfortunately, there has never been a third release to complete the story. Very sad!

After getting it, go to http://scp.indiegames.us/ for the Source Code Project and download the graphic enhancements that makes it great for LCDs, and updates it. Even by today's standards, the graphics are still fantastic! In additon, there are all kinds of mods inlcuding a good one for Battlestar Galactica.

Gawd! What a great game!

Freespace 2 was the first PC game I ever bought after getting my new Dell Pentium 3, 600 MHz computer. I spent many enjoyable hours trying to beat that game.

GREEEEAAAT

I have this game, un-opened.... For at LEAST 10 years...
I always heard it was good, just never got to it. Then once saw it on E-bay for 75 USD.
Decided to hang on to it. Well, it appears I have a lost weekend coming up.

CURSE YOU AT'ers!!!!!!!

Do you need a joystick for this, or is it still good with a mouse and keyboard?

It's completely utterly masturbatingly awesome.
I hate space sims mostly, I never liked Privateer, X-wing, Wing Commander, etc, but Freespace is one of the few games I've played through lots and lots of time(both of them).

Here's what you do:
Get FreeSpace 1.
Get FreeSpace 2.
Download the latest FS SCP build(google that).
Enjoy, over and over and over.
