whats fastest cpu for the $ to do seti w/u? and which mboard?

i am considering building a new puter for seti@home
i wonder if anyone has seen a recent review showing like pentium 4 vs Amd,vs whatever
i would like to do the best for the $$,i don't have a real lot of money,so try to spend it wisely 😉
ok looks like AMD XP 1800 best for the $$
Now which M'board to use, i have an Asus a7n266-c in one tower now,
any other good suggestions for m'boards????
Thanks to all!! 🙂😎

Based on my own experience, I'd say the best bang for the buck for SETI would indeed be the Athlon XP processor.. something around the 1700/1800+ ; not too much higher, 'cuz you're then paying a bit more of a premium for the chip, plus with the slightly lower processor rating of 1700/1800 you'll stand a better chance of getting a good OC if you want to try it. 🙂

As for Intel chips, I've only got (3) such rigs running in a home-fleet of (14) total - that should say something about AMD's price/performance ratio. 😉

Everything i've read also points to AMD as your best bang for the buck. Like networkman said, the cutoff point is the XP1800. The last time i checked the 1800 was only a couple of dollars more than the 1700, but about $30-$40 less than the 1900.

There is also a thread on the SETI@home msg. boards(Crunchers Corner) about building a dual 1 Gig Duron setup cheap, if your interested in that. Here's the link: Box for under 700$
It was started awhile ago, so some of the prices listed are out of date, but i see it's just been brought back to life recently.

Good luck!🙂

And, NewEgg has the Tyan Tiger S2460 retail for $169 with $8 fedex shipping.

Oh, how I wish my birthday was near 🙁 😀

Confused
Apprantently some 950 Durons also have the Morgan core

Agreeded with the others the Ath XP offers the best WU times/$ ,e.g it takes a P4 of over 2.2GHz or so to beat an XP 1800 on DDR RAM!.
My XP1500 @ 10.5x149=1565 does average AR WU's in 3.5 hrs🙂
My Duron 1.1Ghz @9x133=1200 does average WU's in 5hrs 🙂 (PC133 RAM)

Btw I would say that the dualie MP1500 would produce much more WU's than a single XP1800 ,regardless of chipset

I would go with a dual 1.0 or 1.2 duron. Tyan board. Expect somewhere in the 6.5-7 hr rate per cpu WU ( 8-10 per day ) If not go with a 1800+ fro roughly the same price. 1.0 durons are $45 while the 1800+ is $105.

ok thanks for the suggestions to all !!!
i have a pair of duron 900's waaah 😱
i had hoped,LOL they would have been morgan,as i already have em 😉

The AthlonXP offers raw number crunching speed. The P4 needs SSE or SSE2 optimizations to really do well. I don't know when or if SETI@Home will support either those or maybe even 3dNow.

a good overclock on a p4 will make it crunch faster than an athlon, but since this is WU/$ the athlon will win hands down.

My AtlonXP 1600@1535 at home crunches a WU between 3 1/2 - 4 hours, normally closer to 3 1/2. The Intel 1.8's I have at work runs a WU anywhere between 4 1/2 - 6 hours! So the AMD in my opinion is much faster at crunching WU's.

LOL
ok i have one unit here running seti with an Asus a7n266-c with an xp1600 if i remember? duh
its aprox 1500 mhz
i wondered if this was still a better buy but going up to the xp1800,, you all help Very much thanks!!

🙂😎

hmm from what i read the AMD XP 1800 still looks like the best Crunch for the $$
how bout mboards? i like my Asus a7n266-c
any other ideas?
i am goin to be replacing an older mboard the used sdram,i have ddr already, hope prices drop a little
😉 Thanks to ALL
