ok im getting all the parts to fix my old computer(for free). ive got some extra parts, i have 2 mobos and 2 cpu's. whats better a 350mhz p2 or a 475 mhz k6-2. it will only be used to surf the net in my room and maybe watching some movies. oh ya it will be running seti@home when im not on it.

They're pretty close in performance, but I would go with the PII. It will be slightly faster, and will also play movies better. Although, unless you're planning on buying an MPEG2 decoder card, you most likely arent going to be able to watch DVD's well. I just looked at a copy of WinDVD4 that I received with a video card about 18 months ago, and it says that a 350mhz PII is the minimum required to run the software. That means that unless you want to watch a slide show, you're going to have to set the resolution to 640x480, with all the options turned off and all of the picture-enhancing features turned off. On the plus side, it won't have much problems playing Divx movies. BTW, why wouldn't you be using your XP1800 system in your bedroom?

The k6-2 will be faster for some things, slower in others, though due to the mhz difference the weaknesses of the k6-2 may be overcome by the higher mhz. In short at same mhz:

1) the k6-2 is equal to slightly superior for Integer computations

2) the P2 is superior for Floating Point computations, by approx 25%

Try to run the k6-2 at 100mhz fsb for some more performance, even if you only clock it at 450mhz(4.5x 100) it will perform better than at the default 475mhz(5x95). Overall I think the k6-2 will be more worth while to use.

I tested Divx movies on my dad's old 400mhz Celery, and they played fine at 800x600.

the k6-2 is in a compaq mobo so there are no overclocking options.

Yeah, but the PII's overclocked too, and since the 350 was the new core (the exact core that was used to make the 450mhz PII's), it would run up to 450mhz with no problems, which would blow your K6-2 away, even it were overclocked.

How sure are you that it's your motherboard? Did you try raising your vcore, when you tried to go above 108?

Well, like I said to start with, I would use the PII. They should do most things at nearly identical speeds. But it's up to you. Neither one is going to be fast enough to do much of anything on besides surf the web, really. Good luck either way.
