So i was in the market for a new laptop when i came across these on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BLACK-...1%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Its got what i was looking for in graphics performance and its pretty sleep looking for the price.

Ive seen these go for around 250 on ebay so i was thinking this:

250 for barebones laptop
250 for 2.4GHZ 35W chip with 3mb cache
80 for a 250GB Hard Drive
25 for an Intel 5300 wifi card
45 for 4GB of memory
-----------------------------------
$650 total

ill be putting windows 7 beta on it for now, so i won't have to buy an OS either.
ill eventually put a DVD burner but i dont need it right away.

good idea? anything with a 9600GT is gonna cost way more then that.

I like the look of the laptop and if you can get the system for a low enough price it would be a good deal, but when it comes to laptops, I prefer to purchase it all at once and on;y have one warranty to worry about, instead of a seperate warranty on each part.

your link now says $350 for the barebones so i don't know if that extra $100 will affect your purchase decision. but otherwise, the price really offsets the risks since the seller seems to be reputable. make sure you get paypal buyer protection.

i just used that to show the part. I searched completed listings and saw some go for around 250 so if i look on ebay for like a month i should be able to get one for that price.

Dont u get buyer protection through paypal no matter what? Im not sure, can someone clarify for me?

also it seems that most of these say 1280x800 or 1680x1050 screen which is incorrect.
I guarantee all of these are all the 1280 models. I contacted a few sellers and some of them confirmed this for me.

How much is it to upgrade to a 1680 screen if i decide to go that route. Wheres a reputable place that sells lcd's besides ebay?

Ive done this before but its but what i did last time was just used the screen from a scrapped laptop thats the same model as the one i put the screen in. I can upgrade the res right?

Are all 15.4 laptop Lcd's the same size? will this fit? http://cgi.ebay.com/New-DELL-I...1%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

mranderson09 here on the forums is selling these. I purchased the upgraded 1680x1050 version for $340, but I believe he's selling them for $300 now. It is a beautiful chassis for sure!

Plus I don't know if your aware but they have an automatic overclock button when its plugged into AC. OC's the CPU 20%.

How about any of these kits? (I am completely new to this)

Is building a laptop worth it like it is for a desktop? Or are there "other factors" in the laptop world that make "pre-builts" a better idea?

How about screen quality? What is currently the top of the line standard? I have seen RGB mentioned once as well as LED display (from the recent anandtech article on the Dell laptop)
