Whats eSATA II?

Recent Asrock mobos have this "eSATA II" how is this diffrent from regulare SATA II? Is usefull at all?
 
my cable company issued dvr has a esata port on the back, so it seems like they are popping up more often.

It's a higher performance substutute for USB and firewire for external HDD duities.
BUSlink has had an external SATA Drive SATA Drive avalable on the market for 3 years or so. BUSlink was first and the only on avalable but one or two more have arrived on the market since then.




You do not need a special motherboard. You can get external sata by purchasing a
controller card that has sata ports on the back plate. Or if your motherboard has a free sata port then a simple PCI back plate will work


 
On the AMD side eSATA/SATA was not hot swapable unil the creation of the NVidia NForce4 Ultra chipset and the ULi was not hot swappable until the latest released chipset {ULi M1697} which also brought along other features such as Firewire {1394a} and High Definition (HD Azalia) audio...

man i can't belive my DFI nf4 boards is bieng outclassed/out featured by an ASrock board. anyway this tech seems like it could potentially be used for more bandwidth intensive task like digital video and external tv tuners.

eSATA is 100% identical to regular sata. The only differance is the port location. Any motherboard with a spare SATA port can get the esata job done with the use of a Bracket. If your motherboard is older than a $30 SATA card in conjuntion with a esata bracket will work just the same.

There are some exceptions here. Some small 2.5 inch and microdrives do not need a power adapter.

eSATA is 100% identical to regular SATA. The only minor differance is the location of the jack you plug your cable in to. In terms of speed eSATA is the same as regular sata and is much much faster than USB or 1394/Firewire.
 
I've been looking to buy an eSata II PCI Express card, but I noticed the comment below, as well as from another buyer that said they were unable to use an internal SATa cable. I understand the speeds are the same and what not, but if this is accurate, why would they change the shape of the connector?
