What's enough?

Hello all
I've been away from computers for a long while now and it's amazing how fast things have changed and how much more complicated things have become. I was never a pro at this and only built simple systems for friends and family but now I want to build a new system for myself and to tell you the truth I don't know where to start so I'll start with PSU's. I'm building a fairly simple system (I think) consisting of a ASUS P7P55D Deluxe or similar, a Intel I5 CPU, 4 GB of good memory, 3 good quality hard drives a DVD Rom and a burner, a good quality video card and a card reader. I have a new Corsair VX550W PSU. Will this do the job or do I need something better?
I would appreciate any suggestions at all.
Thanks
Jim

Just kinda shop for a deal. When I was buying, the Corsair 850W was $99 after rebate. Sure I didn't need all that fire power, but why buy less for more? Now I don't worry about an upgrade power supply wise.

your current PSU will be fine. its a good quality model. its really when you start adding GPUs that you need to go over 600W. sure the technology has gotten faster, but optical drives and HDDs still use roughly the same power or even less with new, more efficient technologies. it also depends on if you overclock, but even if you do that PSU should be quite fine. good luck with the build!

Your psu is far more than enough. You'll probably almost never go above 60% usage on that model.

True, that.

Just keep what you have, as has been said before. It's a very good quality power supply with more than enough to power your system with a nice reserve.

Thank you all very much for the replies. I'm confident with the power supply based on your comments. Now to choose a motherboard and CPU????
