whats dead?

my computer doesnt want to boot anymore... the fans turn on but there are no beep codes and no POST... i've tried removing RAM, video card, hard drives, etc. and just leaving the fans and cpu but still the same thing... when i plug the fan directly into the power supply the no fan autoshutdown feature didnt kick in... it just sat there with fans spinning same as before... i've tried clearing the CMOS, reseating the CPU... still nothing... so i suspect either my CPU or mobo is dead, but i dont know which... does this sound more like a CPU or mobo problem?

I've had several mobos die like that before, that'd be my first guess.

with a properly installed system speaker the mobo should give beep codes if cpu was dead...I lean towards the mobo right now....

It worked previously with this exact same setup???

Also check the power supply....maybe try a new one...

I lean towards the powersupply. I've seen too many people buy new motherboards when they simply didn't unplug the powersupply and replug it directly into a wall outlet for a quick reset. Sometimes the cheap power strips that people use just won't get the powersupply to reset. Once it fires up plug it back into the powerstrip.

just tried plugging directly into wall... still no auto shutdown without the fan... still no beep codes... tho that doesnt totally rule out the possibility of the PS being bad...

yes it worked with the exact same setup... it was getting to be unstable so i thought maybe switching some of the PCI slots would help due to shared IRQ conflicts... switched once, everything was fine but still unstable... switched again... dead...

guess i'll have to try a different power supply first...

Good idea. Sudden instability is often a bad powersupply. Spend an extra $20 over the lowend P/S to get something decent.

I'm currently experiencing the exact same thing, and am at a choice of the mobo or power source being bad.

My troubles began with a power outage. When the power came back on, I have your same symptoms.

Does your hard drive start going when you power up, but no post? My hard drive would go on forever, if I let it, and my monitor doesn't recognize my computer as being on. I've posted here and other places about this, and everyone seems to think that it's my Power Soure or my Mobo.

yeah thats whats happening to me... my hard drive turns on... but it doesnt try accessing it or anything... it doesnt even attempt to load the bios (normally the caps, num, and scroll lock lights flash when bios loads, but they dont now) and my monitor just flashes as its in standby mode...

I had a similar problem once with a KT133-based integrated motherboard design. The thing acted as if the BIOS was fried and would not successfully get to the OS start. The strangest solution was to leave it unplugged from the wall for a few hours. Okay, I stumbled upon the solution by moving it from my desk to a workbench. I didn't plug it in for like six hours. It fired right up like nothing happened. The same machine still does it ever so often but now we know how to fix it.

You can try letting the power supply reset like was suggested in this thread.

If you have an el-cheapo power supply, replace it! Even if it's not the problem, it most likely caused the real problem, which at that point is most likely the motherboard.

yes its a KT133A system (abit kt7a to be exact) and i think its been unplugged for a few hours before but i'll try again tomorrow...

well i left my power supply unplugged all night and all day today and still nothing.. also there were no beep codes when absolutely nothing was plugged into the mobo (including CPU this time) so i submitted an RMA request to Abit... anyone know about how long it should take to RMA?
