I'm actually quite disappointed with the number of people that aren't raising their hands for games like Quake 3 or the Unreal titles thusfar.... I thought there would be more.

well, quake 3 is old and the latest unreal titles suck ass.

i'm surprised that there are so many mentions of BF2 and BF2142. worst FPS games ever.

2142 was bad, but apparently you've never played BF2, because it is the best realism style FPS ever.

i played both. bf2 is garbage. guns that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn if you were standing inside the barn, running for miles across a map because none of your teammates would allow anyone else in the vehicles (only to be shot as soon as you get there and have to do it all over again), constant spawn camping, getting killed by enemies in vehicles (because teammates wouldn't let you in vehicles or they TKed so they could get the vhicle) etc.

i also don't know how you can say 2142 was bad when it's just a modded version of BF2

Best online would hands down be Quake 3, closely followed UT99 (and of course the sequels). While these games still have communities, they are small and competition is very high and hard to get into starting fresh.

Currently I'm having great fun playing TF2 for the zany atmosphere and great team-based combat. Also CoD4 is quite fun and satisfying.

maybe I'll try to scounge up my old Quake 3 disc... that should even run on my current crappy machine. I was pretty good back in the day...

What about these games like Crysis which are suppose to be so awesome that i hear so much about?

unfortunately, the communities are dead. I am probably one of the most disappointed by this realization because there are absolutely no FPS's out there that can fill the void of a quake/UT style game right now :(

BF = garbage
COD4 = fun at first till you realize everything is grenade and heavy machine gun spam
TF2 = OK - probably best out there right now but not saying much
CS/CSS = good if you aim for the realism aspect, but i prefer my shooters to be non stop action and ridulous as possible (again, quake, ut 99/2k4)

the only game im playing right now is warcraft 3 because there hasn't been a good new RTS multiplayer either

i am very opinionated when it comes to games, i dont have time to play all the crap games that come out, so i try to play the ones that i can really really enjoy for a long time.

Vietcong was my favorite... But not enough people played.

COD4 is the current reigning champ IMO. CS:S is always fun though!

SoF2 was the best MP FPS game I have ever played. Nothign has come close to it in all of the years since it kind of died out to newer games.

I know what you mean man... nothing matches the intensity of Quake 3 or Unreal back in it's hayday. I suppose CS:S does based on it's realism, but your intensity is with the perfect shot... not with the fighting itself. More sitting around and waiting than there is fighting. What it does having going for it though is that you're not just holding the trigger down.... which is why I liked BF2. I never got into 2142, I heard the ads in the game were just downright overdone and it in affect ruined gameplay. I always thought Quake 3 and UT were neck and neck in way of fun-to-play... I was on a WC3 kick for a while too after I quit WoW... but nothing has filled the void of time that i've had since. I've heard good things about warhammer though (bring on the chastising). But I still would prefer an FPS to an MMORPG at this point.

war3 brings the aspects of a FPS in that you have to click fast and at the right place... ok it's a stretch, but there is certainly that physical element to it and you have to think quickly. but im still waiting for a good FPS to tickle my fancy. enough with the realistic and WW2 bull shit already! i want my plasma guns, bfgs, rocket launchers and flak cannons!

just wait for quake arena. i can't really think of an fps that's similar in style to q3 that's out right now. painkiller was close. reminded me of qw style gaming.

tf2 is definitely a game you should try out.
cod4 is fast paced run n gun console action type fps.

left 4 dead is coming out next month. i think that's a fps?

I agree. There's still a decent amount of action on public servers for UT 2004 for the games Onslaught and Invasion Monster Hunt RPG.

UT99 is, IMHO, still the greatest online multiplayer FPS game of all time. People still play clan-match style competitive capture-the-flag games on UT99 to this day. It's a real shame that Epic consolized the user interface and server browser of UT3 and released it as a buggy beta because the movement and game play itself felt pretty good.

Q3 is still my most-played online FPS. I still play ctf, it's sad that the majority of the community has died out and there aren't many players left.

I played UT2k4 for about a year and really liked onslaught but it seemed like dedicated ons servers died out. Then I played BF2 for about a year and a half but never reached the level of skill I did with Q3. I've actually been meaning to reinstall and play BF2 again recently.

TF2 by far. the last game I enjoyed this much was the original unreal tournament.

Team Fortress 2 is a friggin blast. Battlefield 2 is also pretty good (large-scale maps, military/realism themed).

There is an excellent server that is populated during North American prime time. (It's often packed full.) Check out the Omnip)o(tents Onslaught server, http://www.omnipotents.com

Hmmm, thanks for the info. I may have to install UT2k4 again and try it out. Although, two days ago I reinstalled D3 and the expansion pack to play through on single player again. :D
