What's currently the best FPS online game?

Hi everyone,

I've been out of the FPS's for a while stuck in MMORPG's for a while, I'm just wondering what the best FPS online game has been in recent time (Edit: The best online FPS game that you still play regularly). The ones that I enjoyed the most the last time I was heavily into them was quake 3, occasionally CounterStrike, if I was really desperate for a cartoony fix I'd play Unreal Tournament... but I'm sure those are all ancient history now.

Any suggestions for a guy looking to get back into them?

Battlefield 2 is probably the best multiplayer FPS right now, since it has been patched and a mod community has taken hold.

Oh yeah, I did play that for quite a long while too, that was a great game, I can't believe i Forgot about it.

cs 1.6 is still the shit imo...playing in CEVO, CAL is stil fun.

tf2 is fun...but hard to get into competitively imo.

you will probably get a lot of CoD 4 replies though.

For me it was Team Fortress 2.

The games are fun, quick paced, and there are different roles to get into.

Team Fortress 2 is a source engine release, the same engine that Halflife 2 uses AFAIK.

The graphics look cartoony but it adds to the feel of the game in a fun way. The game runs smooth as hell on my system and the graphics look sharp and crisp.

I spend the majority of my time with CS:S. But to mix things up I stll play BF2, BF2142, and TF2. There just aren't too many other multiplayer games that held my interest for longer than a month.
I'm suprised I didn't see any COD4 recommendations, but maybe people feel like I do. I'm not uber 1337 or the world's best gamer or anything. But I get sick of COD4 online so quickly. It's really easy and the maps are small, I really loved the single player, but I play it more than the online mode.
So my list in time spent would rank
CS:S or 1.6
BF2/and BF2142
TF2
WIC/Coh (not fps, but I need my rts fix occasionally)
COD4 (at the bottom, but I still play it sometimes with friends)

Team Fortress 2 and Fallen Empires: Legions have been my top online shooters.

I'm an old Tribes fan so FE has been awesome so far.

I play TF2 the most, its easy to just jump into. I used to play UT3, but it felt too much like UT2k4 with a nicer coat of paint, and not that many games running at a time, although I might reinstall it and play again.

Zombie Panic Source is fun, although its not like a long term sort of game, its just something fun but I can see it getting old.

Q3, UT, UT2k4 still have online communities, but they're basically tight knit and the skill level is at an immense level

the version of Unreal Tourny that came out in 2000 is still hands down the best FPS game made in the past decade for the PC IMO

TF2 or BF2, they are really two different kinds of games, aka not the same kind of multiplayer FPS.

For large scale play, I'd say Battlefield 2 - there are some good mods out now and it's been patched. Call of Duty 4 never ceases to entertain me with mindless run 'n' gun action.

What is this "patch" that everyone is talking about???? did it alter game play or something?

Uh... Team Fortress 2 blows away Unreal Tournament in gameplay, graphics, and all around fun. On top of that it's easy to pick up and just join a random server and have fun with. Top it off with a ton of strategy involved with it. Comparing UT to TF2 is kind of like comparing checkers to chess - the amount of strategy in TF2 just blows away UT.

well, quake 3 is old and the latest unreal titles suck ass.

Have you seen TF2? It's cartoon style graphics, lol, you can take a rocket to the face and live.

2142 was bad, but apparently you've never played BF2, because it is the best realism style FPS ever.
