Well I once thought that if I made 60-80k it would be plenty. As time went on and our income exceeded what I had hoped for (married btw), I noticed that I still had the same amount of cash in my checking account as I did when I barely made any money. Why? Well the more you make the more you spend. The key in my opinion is not being affected by a large salary and just spend as you would if you only make 30k a year. If you choose to be a lawyer and pull in 120k per year, and then go out and buy a ton of BS crap just because you can, sure you will have nice things, but you will still be living from month to month. Don't choose a career based on money, trust me I did that once already, and just go with what makes you happiest, and let the money be a secondary concern.

FYI: Lawyers make alot of money because they own their own business.

Being a lawyer can suck though. My father-in-law pointed out that he only has a jaguar to go to work. he's atruck guy. He says, after all .... if you're defending someone that might go to jail, you better not pull up to the court house in a truck.

There is a lot of stress in being a lawyer depending on the path you take. And alot of lawyers only do real estate closing. That's aprice competitive field, so those people make alot less than you might imagine!

i lived in a crappy area of norcal making about $65k... i was miserable having no family and friends... i recently made the move to take a $10k paycut and found a job that i enjoy much more and plus i am with my family, friends, and SO... there's many variables you have to take into account when considering what will determine a good life style

40-60k is easily doable for me... i'm not the type of guy who needs a new car, but instead i'm the type of person who would rather spend money on good food :)

And a Kia isn't that bad. I jsut paid off $20K in debt for my truck. That sucked! last car i'm buying for a while. A echo might be my next ride. Great fuel economy and really cheap!

Why not move? I would...

The oproblem is everyone complains, but are also willingto pay that amount. Eventually, people will stop payingthat amount and prices will crash.

It seems as though both of the careers are appetizing, but it's a pros and cons thing I guess. I'd enjoy them both, and I'd be happy with both, so it seems as though the Lawyer path takes precedence. Certainly not real estate though. I want to be in a court room, civil law I'd hope, but not tax and not real estate.

I live in the bay area and I can say thats a bit too much. You probably are either very close to school or have some incentive to stay.

Trailer park and two Kia's? Otherwise I just don't buy this...

You're sitting at just over a thousand a month take home? A decent car payment is at least $250, car/health insurance $100, and food absolute minimum $200, and you've got under $500 for a house payment and everything else??

No trailer park. Small 2 br house with a detached garage and 2 fenced flat lots. My house payment is $380 a month, housing is cheap here. No car payments since both of my cars are older and I paid in cash. One is a beater and the other is a fairly nice 89 5.0l mustang although I am thinking about getting rid of it and getting something newer now that I make more. The beater will be staying. My car insurance is about $850 a year for both cars together. My job comes with full benifits so I don't need to worry about health care and crap. I wouldn't say I lived great of $18k a year but I was doing a little better then breaking even. Now at $26k and no pesky family to support I have a fair bit of extra money every month.

40-60 is liveable, though it would certainly require some compromises to what you would like, i think

Close to school. Definitely. It was $2250 for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, well i thinkw e have 2 1/2 bedrooms cuz there's this small 6x7 crap, but still.... 2250 for 2nd floor, and it goes up $100 per floor. THey bumped us to the 5th floor only because we yelled at them like mad about some other issue. It could've easily have been $2750 to live up there...

But there are honestly some really expensive areas out there... Cupertino, Saratoga, Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco..

Well thats not easy to say. $40k in some places is upper middle class and in other its the poverty level.

Those stats are very misleading. I don't know any lawyer that enjoys their work. All my lawyer friends want some other career.

My friends working in the film industry make good money, higher than what you quoted. The biggest problem is that they are pretty restricted as to where in the world they can live. As a lawyer, you'd be able to live almost anywhere, as an animator, you'd live where the studios are.
