Looking at replacing my 2013 Nexus 7 for a larger one... My N7 is a sweet device no doubt but I want a larger screen. So what's coming out in the near future. Windows, Android or Apple, doesn't matter. I had the iPad4 and gave it to my wife and Ive played with the Air and like that as well.
What's coming out in 10 inch tablets?

Obviously since Apple and Microsoft just released their new tablets, new ones aren't due out for another year.

Internet Explorer (or browser of choice under desktop usage) will render that you do not need a dedicated app to visit an online resource or service. However, it gives A LOT more options. While the runtime for media may not compare so much to the iPad, it is within respectable usage levels before needing an outlet to rest. (i.e. before you need to do something else that doesn't require a computer)
I have a Surface Pro 1 for work (testing touch support for our Windows apps) and it's a pretty nice 10" tablet as well as a decent laptop once you connect a keyboard. The 2 Pro improves the speed and increases the battery life from 4 hours up to 6.
One nice thing is services like Hulu that put some devices behind a paywall (Hulu Plus) don't do that for the Pro since it's just a Windows device. The mini-displayport works well for connecting to a TV.

Unfortunately not, and there isn't anything reliable on when a new Nexus 10 would ship, either.
Personally, I have an iPad Air and absolutely love it for the tasks I use it for (surfing, gaming, email, media remote, videos). If you're interested in a 'serious' tablet, I'd either look into the Transformer Book T100 or the Surface Pro 2. The Surface 2 and Lumia 2520 feel like a bit too much of a compromise given the limitations of Windows RT, as fine as they are otherwise.
What is real work? People's definition of that vary. I know I would never be able to get "real work" done on any tablet, especially an Ipad.

I suspect the posters in this thread are capable of differentiating between tasks and software that is more suited to a workstation/PC versus a tablet, and by your own definition some people can in fact do "real work" on tablets.
In my workplace, 100% of the "work" we do is browser based.

I think all we know about the refreshed Nexus 10 is that its going to be built by LG and use the same screen resolution. Probably a Snapdragon 800, doubt it'd be an 05, likely at least 2GB of RAM.
Kinda sad that there's no love for the Note 10.1 2014, thats really a great tablet. They need to make more ~8in tablets, dammit. Thats the sweet spot.

I bought an ipad air and returned it:
No Stylus Support and it felt too flimsy for a $829.00 (32 gb/LTE) device.

Apple has never claimed to have stylus support, not sure why you'd purchase one if that was your expectation.

The 32GB/LTE iPad Air is $729, not $829,
(Current promotions are ~$100+ off that price, Target, Staples, BB, and Wal Mart, If my math is correct, you can get a 32GB LTE Air at BB for $609 + taxes.)
None of the reviews I've read or my personal experience suggest the iPad Air is "flimsy", WTF? it's an aluminum box with a glass top glued on, it's rigid as hell.

I have to disagree, if you are used to Android or Windows 8 the iOS interface feels terribly lacking and restrictive. I've got an iPad Air through work and while the size and new design are both nice the software is awful, every time I use it I can't help but think how much better it would be running KitKat or 8.1.

For me I'm okay with iOS's restrictions and lack of features because the star of iOS is the apps, not the OS. I spend most of my time in apps.
The restrictions also keep iOS running very smoothly and the idle battery life is always amazing and predictable.
The main downfall I have with iOS is adding my own music and videos to the iPad. iTunes is slow and the syncing process confusing. And I just gave up on that. But these days I stream my music from Google and my videos from a variety of places and more streaming apps are allowing use to download our media to the iPad for offline use. So I don't really need to fight with iTunes anymore.
Though definitely Android and Windows 8 are better operating systems. If it wasn't for the app quality disparity, I would be using Windows. But for now developers still seem to be in love with iOS and the app quality shows it.

I personally don't see the huge app differences that a lot of you seem to *see*. I had no problem dropping iOS/iPad asap upon getting a Surface Pro 2 -- and I have never once, since getting SP2 though.. "Oh, if I only had an iPad for this certain app" -- Personally I find the whole app quality argument inconsequential.
As for the apps, iOS, yes still gets preferential treatment, because developers are lazy and are still under the impression that it's the "best" OS to make money. As for those apps being better than Android counter parts, for most of the cases, a resounding no. Better than a lot of current Windows 8 apps? Yes, but not for long.

I use both Android and iOS tablets, I see a massive difference, and it seems tech bloggers, Anand, and everyone else does as well,.
