What's coming out graphics-wise in the next 6 months?

I think the video card in my machine has died for 3D, I'll be getting to the bottom of that this weekend. If it has, I'm debating of doing something crazy and getting a $300 (give or take) graphics card. I still have a 19" CRT, so I game at 1600x1200. I really only play Battlefield 3 (64 MP), and I'd like to finally max out the settings rather than play at low everything (except draw distance).

I also plan to splurge and get a Haswell based setup when it's available and the price gouging is over, say in 6 months or so.

Question: Am I crazy?

Question 2: Should I even do this (buy an expensive video card) if in 6 months something far better for $300 is coming out?

I've got a quad core Phenom II unlocked to a six core btw.

Someone talk me out of this... :)

Haswell won't be out in 6 months. It won't be out for nearly a year (Q2 2012). By then we'll be near or at the next graphics product refresh.

IMO, considering you have a CRT, you can maybe play at lower resolution and see if you can get by with a cheaper GPU for the time being. But don't be afraid of spending $300, mid-range cards do not lose their resale value as bad as high end cards when new cards come out.

Within 6 months, we will probably see the Radeon HD8000. GK110 will probably come in Q2 2013 as the high end GeForce 700, and either a GK114 derivative of GK110, or a re-branding of the full GK104 core to mid-range GeForce 700 series, to stay competitive with the HD8000.

The first Haswell should hit in March 2013. Quadcores first.

Else the next 6 months I only think we gonna get some GK106 based cards. GT(X)650? and such.

Hmmm, OK, I think maybe I'll just buy a cheaper card that can push 1600x1200 at High or Ultra, and then just sell it when I do the Haswell computer. It's so tempting though...$300 isn't that much and it'd just be so easy to drop in, max everything out, and enjoy.

Grrr....I need to go exercise or something, the upgrade itch is really hitting me... :)

I may Skip Haswell only gonna get it if it some kinda godly Cpu.. As my Ivy Bridge Set up is pretty impressive atm..

But i will prolly wheel and deal with my 680s and end up with 780s some way or another.

Well, thread update. I broke down and ordered a GIGABYTE GV-R795WF3-3GD

It is almost assuredly rediculous overkill for me, oh well...once in a while I treat myself so I guess this is it for 2012 haha...

They are out lol 30k i think?

But meh at this point with the gpu power u have a 2560x1440 will be fine.

Might happen in 5-10 years for affordable price, hah.

Sony broadcast OLED's are out, are they are bank account punishing expensive. I'm talking more of a consumer type display. ShintaiDK, you're likely right at about 5-7 years.

If my 19" lasts that long I'll be fine with that. Maybe if the x1600 size displays come down in price some I'll bite. I'm a minimalist generally, until it's time I actually have to buy something. Then depending on the situation, I'll either just buy the best thing out, or, best price/performance.

I did see a triple 27" setup though...man that looked nice. The FOV was so much greater than a single 19" it was unreal. I think now I know how guys can see me coming in BF3 where usually I have no clue who's coming up on my left and right...
