what's better than a WRT54GL?

I lived with two other heavy internet users this year, sharing DSL. The dd-wrt firmware was nice, allowing us to use QoS. It seemed like the QoS always crapped out when there were a lot of active connections, though.

I'm now going to be living with and sharing cable with five other heavy internet users.

Do they make a router with all the functionality of the 54g with more RAM and a faster processor? Is this going to be a prohibitively expensive "professional" router?

Any suggestions? My budget is probably around 125. I'm also not really interested in the setup, management, and power consumption of using an old computer as a dedicated router.

Get an old computer and run Astaro Security Linux on it. It works very well and should be fine on an older box if you turn off the security services like content filtering, virus scanning, etc.

Plus if you create an account at my.astaro.com you can get a free home license for up to 10 users and 32,000 connections.

Thanks for pointing that out, in that case he will probably have to go "pro" as most consumer stuff isn't a whole lot faster then the WRT54GL.
