i was looking at the specs themselves and the 1650xt has twice the pixel pipelines as the gto. that's what set off my alarm.

The x1650xt has more pixel shaders. Surprisingly, it lags behind the x1800gto in most games tested here. I'm sure I remember seeing the opposite in reviews, but I can't find it now, so I must say the x1800gto is better.

Hmm, i thought the X1650XT is better since it can actually beat the 7600GT which th X1800GTO failed to do. (traded blows)

However the X1800GTO is a 256bit card, with 12 TMUs instead of 8 on the X1650XT. However the X1950XT has double the pixel shaders. So its really up to you since the X1800GTO is based on the R520 except crippled pretty badly.

The X1800GTO actually defeated the 7600GT particularly when the resolution was raised. The X1650XT is slighly faster than the X1800GTO in Pixel Fillrate and Vertex Operation, but is much faster in Pixel Shaders. But the X1800GTO have a much higher bandwidth which will make this card performs better than the X1650XT in high resolutions and Anti Aliasing due to it's 256-Bits BUS and significant higher Texture Fillrate. http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=386&card2=472 Both cards are good on their strong points. The X1650XT has 24 pixel shaders while the X1800GTO has only 12, both have 8 vertex shaders and 8 ROP's, but the X1800GTO has 12 pixel pipelines while the X1650XT has only 8. Is quite a hard decision, I would rather choose the X1800GTO cause it can be overclocked higher and can perform almost as good as a X1800XL. A X1650XT barely overclocks, but if you don't have plans of overclocking, probably the sheer shader power of the X1650XT can overcome it's bandwidth and Texture Fillrate deficit over the X1800GTO.

Yeah, but bear in mind that the X1650XT is not based on the same RV530 of the Radeon X1600PRO, it is based on the RV570 in which the Radeon X1950PRO is based in which have double the pixel shaders, double pixel pipelines, double ROP's and 3 more vertex shaders.

They are neck and neck with most games(no noticeable difference in performance) with the GTO being faster in Doom 3 engine based games(Prey, Quake 4, Doom 3). Keep/give him the GTO since its faster in those games.
