I was wondering which one is better
the Lite-on 16x dvd drive or the Toshiba 16x one. I read reviews on the Lite-on 16x which say its a pretty good drive but I was leaning toward the Toshiba since people say it can read anything you stick in it. I'm mainly going to be using it as my main cd reader like playing Diablo 2, installing stuff, etc.

I have a Toshiba 12x dvd, dead silent and very fast. Avoid the 16x toshiba though, I beleive it can only rip DVDs at 1x:(

I am struggling with the same decision. The Lite-On drive seems to offer a better value, but the I've had a 2x Toshiba DVD-ROM for 3 years, and it's served me well. Anyone know whose drive is under the Lite-On clothing?

erikiksaz, I did search but still haven't made up my mind and your post didn't really help. whats wrong with asking for more opinions? Besides a search on liteon most people are posting about the CDRWs which I'm not interested in.

I've used both the Toshiba and Lite-On. The seemed to both be about the same volume when in use. I love the Lite-On in my computer. DAE at 45X or more in the real world is something few drives can boast. It has had some trouble with the extremely scratched up DVD's I get from NetFlix, but overall, it's great. I've read around a terabyte of info with it.

Im very pleasod with my Toshiba .. I had a pioneer before .. but it died after about a year. When Liteon first came around I didnt know if i trusted them, but i have seen A LOT of positive feedback on them, So i would say get whichever is less expensive as both Toshiba and Lite-on look pretty good.

I have the Liteon 16x (just got it) and had an issue with playing a DVD (the PowerDVD software wouldn't open the Region menu so it could get set. Had to use WinDVD to set it, but haven't had any issues with it since then.

My 24x liteon burner rips music cd's much faster though, really noticably. Any advice from you other Liteon owners?

hmm problem with pioneer is that it doesnt do subchannel data according to cdrinfo's review, otherwise it would have been one of my choices.
I think I'm gonna get a liteon even though it has trouble reading badly scratched up cds, the toshiba would have been nice but the slow dvd speed kinda sucks.

I personally like toshiba. I'v had two drives from them now and not one has failed on me yet. If you do go the toshiba route, make sure that you get thier newest 16x dvd drive. It has 512k cache instead of the 128 that they put on the origional model. There is a review of it on cdrreview if I spelt it right. There is a definite link on storagereview.com to that site. It is definitely fast enough for any dvd software you could ever throw at it. Now if they could just get more software to use with it.

If you want to rip DVDs then you don't want Toshiba, 'cause it's locked at 2x. But the LiteOn slows down tremendously when it has trouble reading the discs, although it's overall performance is the best of the class. Consider AOpen's 16x as well.

Well, I have the Toshiba 16x DVD model. Not sure how much cache it has. It works great however. DAE is decent, not spectacular. Like an average 12x-14x. It feeds enough data to whatever DVD program I'm using. The rumors are true though, it only rips DVD's at 2x max. (At least in my experience.) Yes, it can suck sometimes. But I dont rip DVD's that often anyways. It's much much quieter than the pioneer 16x DVD drive. My friend has one, and the Db difference is more than noticable. I know you're not considering the Pioneer, but the point I'm trying to make is it's extremely quiet. I'm sorry I dont have any experience with lite-on to share. I think either of these drives will probably be great, and suit whatever you're needs may be. So rest assurred that there is only a better choice out of the two. Not a wrong one.

Hope that crazy rambling helps, Jake.
