Weird....I would have to say Far Cry. I'm not a huge fan of FPS's so my opinion might not be too valid. I thought HL2 was overhyped. The graphics were quite a bitter better in HL2 but I liked the open ended feel of Far Cry better. It just took more skill and strategy to beat some of the levels. Crouching behind trees, logs, and whatever else you could find while the enemy AI hunted you down...it just felt alot more real (especially on higher difficulty settings). It really gave me a rush. HL2 just felt like any FPS/Adventure game with glorified graphics. It did introduce some cool lighting and physics that are bound to show up on future games. I think the "fun factor" was just higher on Far Cry IMO.

IMO Far Cry by a long shot.
The environment is great, some parts make you wanna grab a beer and listen to some metal on the beach, other parts are pretty scary, like hearing the TriGens groaning somewhere close in a dark building.
Also, the weapons were far better in Far Cry, they're not spray&pray type, but at least you can aim with them unlike in HL2 where there are only a few select weapons where careful aiming actually pays off.
The story is lame, but it works fine for what it is, an action game.

Far Cry was one of the best of 2004, if not the best.

hl2.

far more polish. far more repeat value esp with cs source.

and b*tching about steam..well since they are delivering with qaulity its tolerable. its not that bad. you can always not buy steam products when they are of poor quality.. its just a choice. the auto updating of patches is convenient, and the extra levels they keep adding to cs source and such are very nice.

I wouldn't say that. Gameplay and enemy AI were good too, IMO. As you said, the environments were attractive, but they were also huge. And the size left the player many options and strategies when it came to taking enemies out.
This to me is why FarCry is better. FarCry isn't obviously linear like HL2 and FarCry's AI is so much better. So if any thinking is to be made, it has to be in FarCry. Too many things point you into the right direction in HL2. And FarCry is MUCH, MUCH harder than HL2, if you like difficulty. You get a lot of difficulty options, so don't be frightened.

Another vote for Far Cry. I had no problem with Steam at all but found the HL2 to be pretty boring. I had to force my way through a lot of it hoping it would get better.

Fary Cry and Half Life IMO while in the same genre focused on it in very different ways.

In all honesty I prefered the feel of combat in Far Cry - it seemed much more fluid and open with far more possibilities as opposed to Half Life's more crammed atmosphere where enemies didn't seem to have any real intelligence especially when working as a team. In this Far Cry excelled and so far is one of the very few games which has exhibited AI that doesn't 'suck'. Still the over-powerful slasher Trigens in Far Cry somewhat ruined the feeling/balance of the game.

In everything else Half Life 2 excelled - storyline, immersion, expansive world, characters etc.

Take your pick.

Far Cry

I thought HL2 was boring. I never got into CS:S and the Deathmatch is kinda silly. I didn't like Steam either. It was all a big stinkin' disappointment.

I preferred HL2. The environments in Far Cry were very nice, but the character models just weren't very convincing. Almost the exact opposite of HL2. Far Cry felt a little slow to me, like watching a game of CS where two hardcore players are left, but neither one of them wants to fight out of fear they may lose and lower their kd. The limited save was very frustrating to me. Combat in HL2 was much more intense, and generally more enjoyable. Plus the story was much better.

I had more fun playing FarCry. I'm going to play through HL2 again to make sure I didn't miss something. I liked the more open outdoor environments of FarCry. In HL2 I always felt like I was in some cramped corridor.

Steam has gotten much better, but is still sometimes annoying. With that said, HL2. Far Cry looks nice, but let's face it, HL2 has a much better storyline and gameplay. I was able to play HL2 on a P4 1.8 with a 9200se on medium settings (800x600) and NO lagging whatsoever. How nice is that?

i felt hl2 lacked the story elements of HL1, i was a bit disappointed. i've never played far cry, so i won't compare the two. but yes, steam sucks :|
