I wouldn't say that. Gameplay and enemy AI were good too, IMO. As you said, the environments were attractive, but they were also huge. And the size left the player many options and strategies when it came to taking enemies out.
I played on the "realistic" mode and size of the environments came into play a lot during the game. The enemies were tougher and smarter, and the use of the binoc's, a sniper rifle, and night vision became not just helpful, but necessary for survival. Far Cry on realistic mode was the most difficult and fun game I have ever played.
Although, as I said before, HL2 was a better game overall. The atmosphere, the 1984ish feel of the game, was very well presented and played-out. The gravity gun, the combine, physics, and the story and characters made it a better game than FC, IMO.
