What's better Clawhammer or Newcastle?

Newcastle is better. The FX-53 is the fastest proc out there for consumers. If you're trying to decide between the 3400+ and the 3500+, I guarantee you that you will not notice a difference in speed, although one will exist. The 3500+ will edge out the 3400+ in many applications, but it is very slight. I personally went with the 3500+ because I realistically think that I'll be able to upgrade the processor in a year and add some life to my computer. The Clawhammer is dead after the 3700+ in terms of AMD coming out with higher performing processors.

It depends on what your budget is and what kind of person you are. I felt like I'd regret going with the older platform even though I probably wouldn't have noticed a diffference. I paid $122 for the MSI K8N Neo2, arguably the best mobo for the price. And I got the 3500+ for $370 from Monarch. I could have saved about $70 on the proc, and no money on the mobo if I had gone with an equivalent Clawhammer solution. To me, it's worth the $70 of "wasted" income to have the option to upgrade next summer.

Some people may argue that they could have saved $100 bucks buying a Clawhammer, OCed it, and had a better performing system than I have for cheaper. And they're prolly right. But I am content with my choice, and I think I chose prudently. It all depends on your spending, overclocking, and usage habits/threshold.
 
Cache is difference. It is like comparing a 1700 and a Barton 2500. The Barton has more cache but the 1700 can oc better. If you overclock the NC "might" over clock better, but I had fine luck with my CH 3400. I am now at 2.76
 
i would probably go with the clawhammer. Only if your overclocking. if u had a 3200 Clawhammer and a 3200 newcastle both at 2.4ghz the clawhammer would have better performance

I'm not saying you went the wrong way here, but your logic is flawed... If your mobo is compatable with both the Newcastle and the Clawhammer, how can choosing one over the other give you a greater or lesser ability to upgrade next year?
 
for example:

what are the spec differences on the 3200+ nc as opposed to the clawhammer?
and what do these differences mean at stock? after an equivelant oc? what is the price difference? is it roughly like comparing a 2.8 northwood to a 2.8 prescott? which would you recommend? lil curious about this topic myself. thanks.

The mobo RobJ got was a socket 939 mobo, which does NOT support clawhammer.

socket 754 = clawhammer, newcastle
socket 939 = newcastle only

If RobJ had gotten the socket 754 mobo, then he would only be able to upgrade up to an A64 3700+ like he said since AMD is not building any faster cpus for socket 754. So getting the socket 939 mobo will give him greater upgradeability next year (and the year after that, etc) since AMD is focusing on building faster cpus for that socket 939 such as the FX-57, A64 4000+, and dual-core cpus.
 
Ah, ok. Makes sense now, he is actually talking about the socket, not the core. I was under the assumption that one would really only be considering a socket 754 mobo when comparing Newcaslte to Clawhammer for the reasons you stated. If the thread was about 754 vs 939, then the choice would be obvious, go with 939...

 
I will also go with CLAWHAMMER because of 1MB Cache, and tell me guys who have this 3200 64 bit how did you guys get overclock so high guide me please. Actually my Motherboard bios does not let me change VCORE. So there is any way i can go upto 2.4 or what ever.

if you had the newcastle at 2.4 the clawhammer is overclocked 200 mhz more than the newcastle is then. so if you want to overclock them both 400 mhz, you would put the ch to 2.4 and the nc to 2.6, and then the nc is faster. correctamundo?
 
I have the 3200+ clawhammer, and I'm not able to overclock to even 2.2. My pc3500 is stable at 230fsb according to memtest, but I still fail Prime95 after 3 seconds.
 
to revive an old thread:

the 1mb clawhammer CG is a terrible overclocker. I wish i had gone with the newcastle.

Right now, I have a 3200+ 1mb clawhammer CG and the max i can go is 2.31Ghz (that's with 1.6V vcore too). If i get to 2.35, it would fail prime 95 after 2 minutes.

The extra cache really adds some instability to the OCing. It sucks when a 3000+ newcastle can do 2.5 at stock cooling at stock voltage!
 
I'd go with a S939 mobo, and what ever CPU you wish, NC or CH. As long as you have a s939 board, you have the option to upgrade beyond the 3700.
