Whats all the hype with GMail?

Whats with all the hype?
Is it even wise / safe to have an email account that is associated with a search engine? Sounds to me like spammers paradise. And google keeps all your emails / files on record with them (since they are a search engine)

Gmail has the best webmail interface I've ever used, has great searching facilities (it's quicker to find something in my Gmail account than if I was to download the emails and search through them with Outlook etc), 1gb of storage, so you can access many emails from anywhere.

wow, you really sound like you're above us all... :roll:

It's simple, clean design, isn't cluttered with large ads everywhere, and it's from google. I love the clean simple design and the space they give, no need to ever worry

Another plus (for me at least): Supports non-Western characters. Yahoo mail doesn't unless you log into the respective countries Yahoo mail (need to create another account) and the same with Hotmail.

One negative is the address book, I can't just check a box and it has a list of addresses populate the To field with a block of contacts. Sux. But overall I like it alot better than yahoo.
