What's a .rtf file extension?

It's showing up as a word doc for an association. Never heard of that file format before. It came from a reliable source, but I'm still hesitent to open.

how to change wordpad so it doesn't open automatically at rtf
I want it to open with txt

go to Tools -> folder option -> file type -> pick your extension -> change -> pick programs you want to open it.

Go into "My Computer" or into Windows Explorer.
