There really aren't too many good radar detectors out there anymore. Most cops use laser nowadays. And since laser is focused in a straight line and travels at the speed of light. Once your alarm goes off its too late they already caught you.

Actually, if you do want a really good detector you'll probably need an installed detector. There's one that can handle lasers, it's actually "illegal" because it "cloaks" your car against lasers.

Yep!

I know of at least one leading magazine (Car & Driver I think) that tested the Passport 8500 and the Valentine One together (along with a bunch of also-rans) and the Valentine One FAR exceeds ALL others. But...when dealing with LIDAR (laser) its still a 50/50 at BEST.

Doesn't Uniden make one that they compare to Valentine 1. It's got like a built in GPS system... but yeah.. I've heard likewise "Valentine or Nothing"

Radar detectors aren't necessary. If you are thinking of speeding on the Interstates you can do so with relative impunity by staying to the right and making sure that there is always somebody going a little faster than you are. I call them "cop catchers."

Another vote for the V1. Its the best in the world. All the others are adequate at best or are gimmicks that lull you into a false sense of confidence.

Regarding the laser and/or instant on....if you are by yourself and the gun is pointed at you it doesn't matter what you have. Nothing will cloak your car. However, I have seen a proposed EMP device that disables the electronics on police cars. (provided your car is shielded of course.) Obviously something like this would be illegal.
