What's a nice watch in the $500-$1000 range?

After my experience with my current watch, I will not get another Invicta. I have an 8926 and it loses at least 3 minutes per day. If I am not super careful tightening the nob after correcting the time yet again, the watch will stop.

What about Traser? Military-ish, dive watches older then Luminox. Might be a bit less then what you want though.

Thanks - I'll check them out

I'm a big fan of Ball watches, especially their Engineer Diver II watch. Although MSRP is $1500, most dealers are willing to go around $1k for it.

Also...think good and hard about getting a auto or mech. watch from an authorized dealer. I find that these types of watches will need service about every 3 to 5 years. With quartz, I find that it's not as important as there's much less to service or go wrong with.

I have an Oris Williams F1 with metal bracelet thats nice, around $600 online.
After much consideration, I al going to get that same watch. I just have to find my local authorized dealer and decide on the exact model

There's 2 kinds of watches:

A sub-$20 one from Wal-Mart

And a $3k+ one (Rolex, Omega, etc.)

Nobody "notices" one of those "in between" watches, and let's be realistic, it's about notice.

I have a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Automatic. I have it with the blue face and I think it looks very sharp. Even though it's an automatic, it keeps very good time.

Just going to throw out a few here for that price range:

Hamilton
Longiness
Tissot
Luminox
Sector
Chase Durer

There are others im forgetting ATM, but most of these are in the sub $700 range (for what youre looking for). If you want to drop some cash look at Omega.

edit: you could also PM DonVito if he doesnt show up here. He is one hell of a watch goon.

just so i understand one thing, what makes this watch cost $787? it looks just like my dad's $50 watch. is it more accurate? what makes the watch worth $787?
A good question. There are a couple of things:

workmanship
complex precise self winding machine
design
brand cache
bling

the relative weightings of each are different for each person...

I have an admitted bias, but frankly I don't think there's a watch in that price range with more character or appeal than the Sinn 656. Sinns have a presence and no-BS engineering and design integrity that is hard to match in their respective price ranges.

I also really like Bill Yao's Quad10 watches, which are handbuilt to your specs and regulated before delivery - that is a lot of watch for the money.

The other watches that appeal to me in close to that price range (they are somewhat more) are members of the Omega Seamaster family - I actually prefer the Seamaster GMT to the standard Seamasters, though, because the GMT doesn't have the goofy helium release valve, which IMO ruins the symmetry and elegance of the design.

Very cool site!

thanks (and for the PM)!

No problem. Frankly, and no disrespect meant to your wife or her generous gift, you could buy two handbuilt watches from Bill Yao (say, one customized Seiko diver and one Quad10) for the price of that Heuer, and each would, IMO, be a more interesting watch than the Heuer. Again, though, this was a very kind and generous gift, and I would be proud to wear the Heuer too.

I have two Yao-built Seiko divers, and each is a truly special watch. One is this watch, on a Seiko President bracelet, and the other is essentially like this one, on an oyster bracelet.
