What's a nice watch in the $500-$1000 range?

My darling wife got me a Tag Heuer Formula1 for Christmas and as much as I like it, we are going to return it because we can get it $200 cheaper online. Any suggestions for an alternative before I pull the trigger?

My tastes run to the black faced metal band diver style watches...

edit: I am finally pulling the trigger and after endless searching, I am getting this watch

Buying online isn't always the best route for watches. You'll lose out on the warranty work in case there is a problem. You may have to go through the vendor, as your manufacturer may not honor online purchases. i just recently bought my Tag from Tourneau. i could've saved about $500 if i purchased it online.

I guess it depends on your definition of "nice." Really good automatic timepieces should run at least $2k. But if you're looking for a solid watch that won't break you, Tag is the way to go.

A used Omega Speedmaster. Though I also find some of the Hamilton's nice if you're on a budget.

Sinn makes some nice watches. However, I think that with the latest price increase, a new watch might not be in your price range. You can probably pick up a used EZM2 on a watch forum for ~700. The EZM2 is a neat diver's watch. Its filled with silicone oil to be visible from wide viewing angles. The GSG-9 uses a variation of the watch.

Not quite what I am looking for, but there is some appeal to using a watch that gets issued to Special Forces. Not sure why, but it's there...
