What's a nice -nice N for the UNIX client?

I've been running -nice 19 for close to 4 hrs and am only getting 18% done.
I am aware lesser the N the more priority SETI gets but what is a good trade off number? Thanks.

How busy is the machine normally? If its not very busy it doesnt matter much. If it is a desktop, anything less than 19 will cause other things to slow down (I always had problems with netscape being INCREADIBLY slow when running seti). Try 10, if thats fine, try 0, if thats fine, try -5. If 0 isnt fine, try 9, then 8 then 7. Its time consuming, but it will help you figure out exactly what settings give you the best response and the best performance.

Thanks. I've decided to keep it running at 19. I still need to compile my work, you know :)

I agree about the experimentation... Plus it will depend on the speed of your CPU. I run both SETI & F@H2 on the T-bird 1.2@1.4 that I'm typing this message on right now (running SuSE 7.2 & Netscape 6). The SETI is being run from WINE and the Folding client is a linux one. I have the SETI WINE process niced at -15, which gives it ~64% of the CPU to Folding's 34%. This hasn't impacted my surfing at all. I have even compiled proggies (and even a kernel) like this and both DC programs will defer.

A nice of -20 is the lowest priority that you can assign to a *nix process and SETI does recommend the -19 to make sure it doesn't interfere with other programs.

I was using netscape 4.7, so it was even slower. But with eccP109, I run them at around -10 to 10 depending on what Im doing and which machine Im running it on. It doesnt affect much until get into the negative numbers for my desktop machine.
