Whats a good wireless setup?

My girlfriend just got a laptop from Santa and we want to go wireless with it.

My computer is hooked up to a cable modem with just one port. I'm not concerned with wireless with mine.

Would the wireless base part hook up to my current cable modem then I would plug into it via the cable and my girlfriend would just need to get a wireless card for her to use it? Or would whatever I get totally replace my current cable modem?

I know that I don't know much about what I am talking about but thats why I'm here, to get information. Did the above line make sense?

I'm not looking for cutting edge wireless, just something that works well for the price. One that could be hooked up to either DSL or cable would be a plus too as we are moving fairly soon as there is no telling what service we will get next.

thanks

I got a netgear MR 814 v.2 wireless router and access point for about $35 after rebate..it gets the job done....easy setup

Just as a suggestion you can't go wrong with any netgear setup IMO. I have set up more than 10 wireless networks for family and friends and have used Netgear for all wireless equipment (routers, hubs, PCMCIA cards, CF cards etc) and I am yet to have a problem with any of them... Their customner support is OK considering some long wait times. But hey I have only had to call them once and that wasn't cuz of a problme with their product.

Oh jebesus, now your overloading me!!!! Just kidding.

Price is a consideration and I'ver been researching the netgear so I think I will get that one.

Thanks for the input tho.

Can anyone answer my question about the card? I think it would work fine but as this is my first time in wireless I want to make sure I have everything right before I order.

any 802.11b card should work fine...did her laptop not come with it? also, dont get a trendware...find something else...ive heard horrible stories
