What's a good webcam?

i heard the logitech 4000 is choppy and isn't good for streaming. is this true? i was looking for something around the $50 range.

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 was supposed to be a really good camera. The choppy streaming could be due to the low upload bandwidth available. I videoconfrerenced with my friend and the picture quality was decent. It lagged a little bit but I only have a 384kbps upload speed.

I know this is out of your price range, but I found it cool, nevertheless. I went into RadioShack to kill the leftover time of my lunch break, and they had the Logitech QuickCam Orbit. The video quality was really good, but what was really interesting was that it would follow your face wherever you moved it, up or down, side to side. The cheapest I've seen it sell for was $160 Canadian. It's pretty gimmicky, and already out of your pricerange, but I thought it was cool. Too rich for my blood though.

The Logitech 4000 is actually quite good. Unless you find a good deal and can get a pricey cam for cheap, you won't be happy with a $50 cam. Webcams are extremely picky about light, and unless you have perfect lighting conditions (lots of sunlight), the pictures will come out awful. I'd consider dropping near $100 for a webcam, which is what the 4000 is, plus it can do that face-following thing. The streaming quality of the 4000 is fine, mayhap said person was using javascript to show a stream (which is going to be choppy no matter what as the page is just refreshing images really fast) or as ojai00 said, they had little bandwidth to use. Window Media Encoder 9 is a good choice for setting up a streaming cam.

has anyonused the haupagge tv card as a web cam inoput device? i believe it has video in ports, and software that will allow you to use a off the self-camcorder as a web cam..

use a normal camcorder as a web cam? that'll be too bulky for me.

i use a logitech quickcam messenger ($25 OEM) and it's totally fine for what i do. unless you're on a T3 connection and want to stream HD video, a cheap 640x480 webcam should be fine. the image isn't stellar, but most people don't have enough bandwidth to transmit a higher resolution image.

I have 2 of these cams, they are great.

Anyone that said it is choppy is running it at high res and doesnt have the upload bandwidth for it, it is easily adjusted.

If you want to do real time video conferencing your going to need a broadband connection on both sides. The camera itself has 4 different resolutions 160x120, 320x240,640x480 and a 1 megapixel setting. I also have 2 of these cameras. Works great and the built in mic is a plus

Right now using Win XP with Yahoo Messenger, the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 is having driver issues. All emails to Logitech tech support have not been answered. You can login on the Logitech forum, look up webcams, you'll see about 300 forum messages all having the same problems using Messengers.

If you want a webcam for video taking then sending an attached file, that comes out beautiful with the 4000 model. I have 2 of the 4000 models.

ok, but exactly how big of a bandwidth do you need? "broadband" doesn't answer my questions. thanks ahead.
