What's a good vid card for my system? (Celeron 1.2)

If anyone can believe it, I just recently upgraded from a 300a@450 to a Celeron 900@1.2. That was the fastest chip my mobo (Asus P3V4X, AGP 4X) could support, so I did that instead of hassling with a whole new system. I also have 640 mb of PC133, and I think the pc is plenty fast enough for me. But here's the kicker: I'm still running a Voodoo3 3500! This card is really due to go into the trash: poor performance by today's standard and NO real support for W2K, let alone XP.

All I know is I want to play some Counterstrike. I really have no idea what kind of card to get, I've been out of the hardware loop for a while. Used is fine, there's always good vid cards in the FS forum. Video input would be nice so I could record some stuff, but a standalone card may be better than a combo vid card/recording card. Or maybe an older AIW would be good enough for that? I don't know. I do know that I'm not buying the newest $399 GeForce 8. I wouldn't want to go any higher than $150 at the absolute highest, and I would only spend that much if it was something like a really really good card that normally went for $250 or something like that.

I just need to start somewhere with some options.

Actually, I have that motherboard too... I think with a slot-T adapter you can use the Celeron-Tualatin CPU's, which are a good deal faster than the "standard" Celeron. The Tualatin is essentially a full Pentium III - it has 256k cache, and the other features found on the Pentium III. With the Slot-T adapter, you are supposed to be able to use the Celeron-T in these slot-1 motherboards. The only difference I am aware of between the Celeron-T and Pentium III is that they don't come ina 133 mhz FSB version... which is good actually.

Oldfart recommended buying a 1.0 or 1.1 ghz version of Celeron-T and overclocking to 133 FSB... then youl'll have the memory bandwidth and a CPU running around 1.4 or 1.5 ghz... not bad!

All that being true, many video cards are CPU limited, but a Geforce 4-ti4200 would be good in that system, or a Radeon 8500

A cheap, used Ti 4200 would be a nice upgrade from your Voodoo, and you should be able to find a decent one for under $100. I honestly wouldn't spend much more than that unless you were planning on buying/building a new system soon and planned on using the same video card in the new rig.

Interesting double post, Mloot. 😉

I do have a Slot T adapter, but I'm not actively looking to increase my CPU speed. For what I use the computer for, I haven't even noticed any huge increase going from 450 to 1.2. The extra money to go to 1.5 or whatever could be better spent elsewhere.

Any other video card opinions?

nycdude: we'll see. gotta do some more research on these cards. any other opinions?

Nothing wrong with getting the best you can afford (Ti4200 or R8500) - it'll always be ready for your next upgrade. 🙂

Or you can buy the gF4MX from nycdude and use the leftovers to buy yourself a shiny new Tualatin Celeron from another AT member ... 😉 Tualatin Celeron ~= Coppermine P3, btw.
