just hooked up my Brother laser to the wi-fi AP, and i find it really useful to be able to print from my notebook pc while i'm on the couch...

now a friend said there was software available to share yr printer over the internet.. while i can see that it would be cool, i cannot think of a good use for it..?

anyone have any cool ideas? if i could give you say an IP address to print to.. or some such way

Printing stuff on your home printer while you are not at home. Why else would you share your printer on the internet?

So you can print a document off at work, rather than wasting ink on your home PC?

And that's what would happen. I knew a guy in college who shared out his printer, until he ran out of paper.

It's also a good thing to have that printer set up in your living room so that your wife/parents/whoever comes in while you're away and they see half a million pages of goatse and kiddie porn being printed out by someone that wants to have some fun with you.
I can see it now....You share your printer, someone that hates you prints out a ton of kiddie porn, then calls the cops in on you, and as you're walking in the door from a long hard day at work, you get greeted by a pair of handcuffs, so you can spend a long hard night with big bubba down at the local pen.

Sure, there's software available to do it over the net, but why not just allow file and printer sharing, then password protect it? Then you can share your hard drive or whatever folders you want shared as well. Or set up a VPN, like jst0ney mentioned.

i have a client that has 3 offices. they use one central fax, they use efax. he goes thru the faxes at the end of every day and then prints the appropriate fax to the appropriate office and deletes what he doesn't need. this way, he doesn't have to waste ink printing the same fax at all three offices (which is what used to happen) . . .

my brother has a network printer and all i forwarded one port on his router and voila his graphics people can print stuff to his network printer directly without emailing anything or setting up any kind of ftp transfer or whatever. they print it to his printer and he proofs it.

simple. there are uses for it.

Windows XP Pro, 2000, and 2003 Server all have this feature built in- no need for extra software. (Win 9x has it as a free add on from MS). You just have to have IIS installed to make it work. We have a lot of printers set up on IP's at our office, it makes it easer to track them and you can print to them from anywhere. People can just print to "http://servername/printers/sharename/.printer" while out in the field or anywhere they wish. It's also a great replacement for a fax machine- no long distance phone calls and high quality documents.
