whats a good synonym for sucks?

While walking back from my biochem class I noticed that alot of people do not use the word 'sucks'(in particular people of age 30+). Like 'this sucks' or man that sucked' etc
to describe something that sucks what do they use. for the life of me I cant think of a word that comes close to the same meanings as sucks

anyone got any synonyms for 'sucks'?

...depending upon what exactly they mean.
