Whats a good starting Long gun (Rifle) for a shootin newbie?

I just turned 18 as you all know 😉, and am itchin to stretch me new constitutional freedoms...no one on my moms side of the family was ever in to shooting ramble ramble ramble...short end of the story is, the biggest caliber I've shot is a .22.

I wanted an idea from you (like I wanted an idea on a bank :Q) on what a good first rifle would be. I do want somthing bigger then a .22, and somthing that will beable to hold a scope in the future, but know ass from grass when it comes to this stuff. I ask for a rifle and not a hand gun because in oregon you have to be 18 to buy a rifle and 21 to buy a handgun.
 
Stick with the big three primarily. I just got me a new Browning BAR Mark II Safari in .270 win
Look at Ruger No 1 SIngle shot rifles. Hit the used gun rack and dont buy an import.

My first rifle was a Winchester model 70 Stainless 30-06 with a Leupold 8x scope. It cost my dad about $800; ~$400 for the rifle and another ~$400 for the scope. Im not sure if you want to spend that kind of money on a gun, but that rifle shot really well. I remember shooting a tree branch off at about 150 yards. The 30-06 does kick a bit and you might not want to shoot it all day, so you may want to get a .223 or something. Right now Im planning on getting a custom AR15 for competition shooting. If your willing to spend the money, an AR would be a great gun for you. It doesnt kick much, is quite accurate, has relativly cheap ammo, has a good selection of scopes, and it even looks cool🙂. You can also compete in service rifle matches which are pretty fun.
 
Effect of kick also really depends on what your shooting.
First time I shot a 30-06 was target shooting. I thought it was one of the worst guns I had shot. Took some getting used to.
Then one day out hunting saw a few antelope at the bottom of a ravine running across from me. I popped out 6 rounds so fast I didnt know what happened, never felt the kick once.

.223 Thats the other I was gonna say along with .243 and 30-30. Couldnt think of it. Late nights really fry my brain sometimes 😕
 
It depends on what you want to do with it. If you are mainly interested in target shooting don't automatically dismiss the .22.

The Remington model 700 is one of the most popular rifles that comes in a number of different calibers. It would be worth looking at as a used one could probably be found for a reasonable price.
 
For target shooting, not much beats a good .22. You can still put a scope on them, they're reletively cheap, and the ammo is super cheap. I'd recommend a Ruger 10/22 if you want to go that route.

As far as the Remington 700, I have an M700 BDL in the 30.06 caliber and it's a very nice gun. It just upsets me that I knicked the stock on the third trip out with it.
 
243 is a great caliber, however, unless you're loading your own ammo, I don't reccomend it. Ammo can be hard to find sometimes.

I'd reccomend either a 22, of if you don't want a 22, a nice AR15. Get a flattop with the detachable carry handle, makes mounting a scope much easier in the future. No recoil, ammo is relativly cheap, and they're easy to maintain. I like my Bushmaster a lot, but they're not cheap
 
Actually, I'd get a .22. One of the Ruger bolt-actions (a 77/22) to be exact. You can certainly put a scope on them (a .22 will still shoot to 100 yards).... and they're a wonderful rifle to begin with. You can master all of the "mechanics" of shooting with a .22... and then move up to a regular Ruger 77 (which feels nearly identical). Plus, no rifle case should be without a good .22.

Not to mention, they're VERY cheap to shoot. And, as far as getting good at it, there's only one strategy: practice! (Centerfires, on the other hand can be expensive... especially if you don't handload)
 
was talkin with crazyschmuck last night on AIM I think I am going to start target shootin w/ .22 and work up from there, I do want to hunt every so often, but not regularly, more interested in accuratly getting rounds to the target consistantly at this point. I think the gun I want to get will be the Ruger 10/22 and go hit up an NRA training class so I have half a clue. more input welcome 😀 just wanted to give a heads up.

also how do you choose a gun? how do you know whats good or not?

I blame any death caused by a gun soley on the operator or owner of that gun depending on the circumstance...ex: someone points a loaded gun at another person and pulls the trigger...operator...loaded gun goes off in house hitting kid eather playing with it, or a misfire...owner...if you want to use a gun for home defense (mostly hand guns) unless its a six shooter, my recommendation is to leave the clip next to said gun with no rounds in the chamber, its fairly easy and fast to load and arm a handgun.
 
guns now are made for sport and hunting as a main focus.

you want to critize gun owners, go after the military, their guns are REALLY made to kill people...
