There are quite a few compact SUV's to choose from, each one suits a different set of needs.
I chose a 2004 RAV4 AWD. The new engine has 161hp/165torque and averages about 25 MPG (mostly highway driving) and handles VERY well in the snow, I took it snowboarding to Tahoe many times. Comfortable enough for me and 3 amigos on a road trip. The RAV4 also crash tests well and has an excellent reliability record, according to Consumer Reports.
The Jeep Liberty and 2004 edition of the Land Rover Freelander are very nice and have REAL off road capability, but at the expense of gas mileage. The Freelander has a nice interior too, I'd call it the luxury SUV of the compact class.
The Honda CRV and Honda Element are both good choices and both have amazing cargo room. The Element has those cool sport seats that resist staining and the plastic (neoprene?) floor, which makes for easy cleaning.
The new Ford Escape, especially the Hybrid, and Mazda Tribute look promising (the 2005 models). They are redesigned with more space, better engineering, quieter ride, et al.
Subaru's 2005 Outback and Legacy lines have also been redesigned. That Crocodile Dundee wagon is one sweet set of wheels.
Lots of good quality vehicles, hard to go wrong. Choose what's right for you.
Cheers,
