I'd just get an el-cheapo one from a big-box store. Then I'd fuss at the school for requiring a calculator. Calculators should be banned from school until the junior year of college.

Yes, I'm serious.

Wow, I actually had one of those TI-30 pictured there until it took a dive from my desk in high school. I feel old now.

They used to overheat if you left them on too long. I think they had a coal chute on one side.

I have a son entering sixth grade as well this year. Did your district set a standard on the school supplies list? Better double check before you buy just in case it's not right. Would hate for you to spend the money on the wrong one.

The one we have to get is called the TI 30XIIS calculator but it's probably different for each district. I think it's around $17 on Amazon or they sell it for $5 at registration here.

I gave my daughter one of my old HP48GXs. RPN's the only sane choice for real work, and she sees what a real calc looks like.

They're not going to be allowed to use a phone during class. Even if it was just for a calculator.

How about a tablet? Carrying around a calculator nowadays just seems so outdated and primitive. Might as well get a slide rule.

A touchscreen will never do if you need a serious calculator. Like tablets and phones in general, they work in a pinch, but aren't suitable for serious work.

I've always been partial to this model of the TI-30. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000JBNX

I used one from 6th grade until I got an 84 in high school.

I had this - actually I probably still do. Worked fine.
