whats a good SAT score to get into a state university?

Recentering happened about 10 years ago. Add 30 points to the old verbal score and 50 points to the old math score to get the new number.

Now, it's possible to get a 1600 without getting everything right.

The 25th to 75th percentile of SAT scores for UT-Austin is 1110-1330. 53% of the accepted students are in the top 10% of thier high school class and 87% are in the top 25%.

Are you a junior or senior?

If you are a junior now:

Keep in mind that all those SAT ranges for last year don't apply anymore for next year. They are dismantling the 'Top 10% Rule' (which, in general, lowered the bar on SATs) and are implementing affirmative action for use in the freshman class of 2005.

If you are white or asian, and in the top 25%, I'd say you probably need a 1300 to get in. If you want to get into business or engineering, I'd say about 1350 or 1400 (for business) and 1300-1350 for engineering.

If you are a senior now:

If you're out of the top 10%, but still in the top 25%, you'd need about a 1250. The SAT ranges they give include the top 10% rule, which are students that get in based upon class rank regardless of their SAT scores. As such, if you are NOT in the top 10%, you need scores a bit higher. The rule tends to being down the average.

1250 will get you into liberal arts, fne arts, natural sciences. 1300 will get you into engineering, 1400 will get you into business. This all assumes you are somewhere between 11%-25% class rank and in state.

Even if you apply to engineering or business, and don't have the scores, they will do 1 of 2 things:

1. Admit you on the condition that you go to summer session before your freshman year (big thing for business majors)
2. require you to go to UT Pan Am, UT Arlignton, UT El Paso or a couple of the other UT schools for a year. If you pull a 3.0, you are admitted to liberal arts.

And if you are out of the top 25%, you might as well forget it IMO. Especially if you don't have extenuating circumstances. Poor class rank + poor GPA = rejected

And it's true that SAT IIs are very important, but they are also very easy.

You better have over a 4.00 to get into UCLA or Cal if you only have a 1300. Of course, it depends on the major you're applying for too.

Don't wait a year. It's hard to go back to school once you get out completely.

I'd say, if and when UT Austin rejects you, they'll offer to accept you in your sophomore year if you go to another of the UT schools and make a 3.0. I'd say, go to UT Arlington (in between Fort Worth and Dallas) and do that if your heart is set on UT. I really would encourage you to NOT go to any A&M schools.

While I don't know your personality, both Texas Tech and Southwest Texas (now renamed Texas state at San Marcos) are also good schools.

I would apply to Texas State at San Marcos if I would you. You're in close proximity to Austin. It's also a decent school, and the people there are equally open minded as those in Austin, in direct contrast to the A&M schools. Texas Tech is academically about the same, but it's much farther from Kileen, and you are in the middle of NO WHERE. You'll appreciate being close to 35, to Austin, and to home if you go to Texas State. However, both SWT and Texas Tech are big party schools. It all depends on your personality IMO.

If you would rather not be associated with a party school, to go UT Arlington and try your best to make a 3.0. You will be admitted to UT into liberal arts or natural sciences if you do.

If you would rather make the most of a second-tier school, go to Texas State or Texas Tech. But if you aren't a big partier, that might be bad for you.

Alternatively, UT Dallas is an option. However, you can't feed from UTD to UT Austin if I recall correctly. However, if you are not a big partier, you will be more at home at UT Dallas than either UTArligton, Texas State or Texas Tech. UT Dallas also has student apartments and not just dorms.

Judging from your profile and your sig, I'd say you tend to range more of with the geeks at LAN parties than with the mindless partying at keggers at SWT and Tech.

EDIT: Yes, I know I generalized a lot in this post. Sorry to any SWT/Tech/UTA/UTD people I may have offended. However I think it's a pretty accurate generalization to the majority of people at those schools. You are free to disagree here but I will not apologize for generalizing, and this thread is about an overview and not specifics.
