I'd just first like to say that I too have been spoiled by series such as the Baldur's Gate series. Doesn't, and hasn't, get (gotten) better than that. I've been so let down by ever RPG I've tried since I finish BG:ToB. However, I can say that KoToR I and II were VERY good, but I DO like Star Wars. I played Divine Divinity and Sacred for a bit .. didn't finish either. Both were basically hack and slash clickfests (as put by boran) that just didn't really appeal to me. I'm looking for something with the story/character development that BG had. I tried Morrowind, got bored of the walking, although I've been wanting to give it another shot lately. Someone suggested Deus Ex, and someone else System Shock 2, both games I thought were very good. I'm also a FPS fan tho, so these hybrid FPS/RPG's were pretty neat. If you think you could handle the FPS nature a bit, then definitely give them a shot. Aside from these reiterations, I don't know what to say, but hey, if you find another GOOD PC RPG, please let me know. :)

Regarding MW, I too got tired of the walking around.....until I installed a module that gives my hero's home teleports to just about anywhere. Cuts down on travel alot but there is still too much hunting around for people that I need to talk to for quests. Also discovered that the travel is there for a reason.....so you can fight stuff along the way to increase your skills. After I got the teleport module my toon was still at a ridculously low level considering my playtime.....cause of all the teleporting.

imho the story of 2 was just unfinished. it did put up the stage nicely for an eventual kotor 3 but I really went like "wtfck is this kind of bull" at the end, left me rather unsatisfied.

I just think that kotor1 set the bar for kotor2 too high, kotor2 is still a very good game

well, i liked them both. first one i dug - even though im not much of a star wars fan, it was just a good game, good engine, nicely done. and fun. the second game i liked because it was basically more of the same. but the amount of annoying bugs as well as the plot pieces that just disappeared was mind-boggling. i understand wanting to get a game out but i have no tolerance for sloppy work. i doubt ill be picking up a kotor3 if it comes out until i can find a copy for less than 20 dollars.

GUILD WARS, really you can play this without interacting if you want. If you like that kind of RPG, otherwise, ps2 is the only way to go with single player RPGs

I don't really have any interest in Deus Ex or FPS hybrid types.

I did have a PS2 and I never played it. Sold it awhile ago.

I think i'm just SOL here. :(

We forgot one.....Gothic 2. You may consider it a hybrid game but it is simply one of the best RPG type games ever made. Weird combat system but the storyline is deep and branching. It's a real living world where the CPU toons actually sleep at nite, LOL.

Vampires: The Masquerade Bloodlines. Big resource hog cause it's poorly coded, but it's an RPG that uses the HL2 engine. It's a decent game if you can get into the plot... but it gets kinda repetative after a while. I haven't finished it yet and I'd estimate I'm about 20 or 25 hours into it.

Well, since you like Bioware products. I'd just download some of the free highly rated adventure maps available via the NWN links.

After spending a few hours with Dungeon Lords, I have to say a lot of the gripes are justified. However, if you like a good hardcore RPG game, it's still good. I grew up with Wizardry and Ultima and Bard's Tale and the like. If I look at Dungeon Lords purely as an RPG, it's pretty decent. No automap? Been there. No character customization? Yeah, no biggie, really. However, I also don't think it's worth more than $20.

Is it because of the monthly fee, or another reason?

I refuse to pay a fee in addition to buying a game. I don't like multiplayer RPGs either.

I gave Morrowind another try today. forget it. My attention span can't handle all the walking.

I may just go download a bunch of NWN modules.

Since you already have your opinion set on DeusEx and Morrowind, I'll suggest some of the older, lesser known items.

Anacronox is great, it seems a little cheesy at first, but actually gets good in the middle. Get the hint guide before you start. You can miss a lot of oppurtunities.
Septerra Core is good if you can find it.
Silver is old-school from the dreamcast days, but a lot of fun if you can get it working on the PC. I think it needs Win98.
Some of the later Might and Magic games are still fun. 7,8,9 are all good (and 3D accelerated).

I must agree that nothing has come close to beating Baldurs Gate II and its add-on. NWN and KOTOR are both fun, but the stripped down D&D 3rd edition takes away some of the magic. They also have relatively simple story lines.

Some folks were working on whole new campaigns for BGII, but I think most of those projects died a while ago.

Get a PS2, lots of RPGs there. It's not too huge an investment, especially considering it's about half the price of any decent video card.

If you haven't played the original KOTOR, you have no business calling yourself an RPG enthusiast.

It probably won't change your mind, but here's my take on the monthly fee and multiplayer...

I've had WoW for about three months now. It's such a phenominal game, that I've only purchased one other game (Forza Motorsport) in that timeframe. If I wasn't into WoW, I would've easily bought at least four other games in those three months. So the monthly fee has actually saved me money in the long run. I mean, think about it... How many single player games will keep your attention for months (years?) on end?

As for multiplayer, it doesn't HAVE to be played mp. 95% of the time, I'm soloing the quests. The other 5%, I'll group with some friends in co-op. PvP doesn't really interest me in the least. But where the multiplayer does come into play, is how dynamic the game is. All single player RPG's are quite scripted, and everything seems to happen because that's the way the developers planned for it to happen.

One of my favorite things to do is run across someone in trouble, and save them with a timely heal. :)

Not just that the events are dynamic, but also the economy of the game (auctions, buying/selling/trading of both goods and services, etc) is very interesting.

what I wrote earlier
"I dont like starwars but I still think Kotor 1 and 2 are some of the best things ever to have come out of the starwars universe, and more, I rank them just below fallout 1 and 2 in the best rpg's ever "

who cares its starwars or not, its a good game, very very good game

Just a shot in the dark here, but have you ever tried Fallout/Fallout 2? Super badass games for their time, and I just replayed through both of them and found it to be fun still somehow. Very atmospheric and deep.

Yet another vote for the Fallout series. You might also give Arcanum a try - I really enjoyed it. Similar "feel" to Fallout (some of the same people worked on it), though not quite as polished.
