yeah this should be in the software forum but I'll chime in with my vote for Blender3d anyway especially since you want free.

Cool thank you. I realize it is software but the traffic in OT is like 10X's that of software.. so when you are looking for a quick answer its the place to go.

point taken, besides this still beats a typical nef or parody thread in OT so it is sort of welcome.

btw not only is blender 3d free, but yafray is a free raytracer that goes along with it that renders pretty well. Only problem is blender has a steep learning curve but I believe it's worth it. Bonus points for there being tons of free tutorials on how to use both plus a large online community and several forums dedicated to discussing blender 3d and yafray.
