Here's PC World's Top 5 Printers w/printer price and cost of operation per year respectively:

1. Lexmark Z52 $179/$131
2. Lexmark Z32 $99/$174
3. Xerox DocuPrint M750 $149/$124
4. Hewlett Packard Deskjet 932C $199/$94
5. Lexmark Z42 $149/$131

So it looks like the higher end HP's consume less ink.

Modus is right on target abot Inkjets. Damned ink cartridges are designed to go fast. I have a nagging suspicion that some use tons of ink to do the nozzle cleaning on power up and shut down. Laser printing...now that's some nice mature technology.

HP makes SOLID high-end laser printers. We have an ancient Laserjet IIP that was purchased in 1988 but is RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP to this day. (only needed to replace the photodrum which was like $100. Of course back then the printer cost $800 new) I feel that their inkjet and consumer laser products are indeed overpriced, though. NEC SS870...that's the way to go.

I have the Epson 777, satisfied with the 8ppm speed and quality but its noisy and consumes ink far too quickly. Is there anyway to tweak the drivers to use less?

Have used Epson Stylus (is more than one Stylus supposed to be Styli?) 740 printers for over a year. (My HS had them all over the place.) They print color graphics in very high quality and their text output is very good as well. They also have decent speed. That said, the Stylus 860 at the prices mentioned would certainly be a better buy as it is a higher end model. I got my personal 740 for ~$70 without rebates. I believe that to get the same quality from an HP you would have to pay $100 more than I did for my Epson.
