My friend is looking for a new laptop, and portability (weight) is the biggest concern here. The lighter the better. He's looking to spend less than $2000. Any recommendations? Off the top of my head I can think of the Dell 700m

I work with dells and find them pretty reliable.. they're plain jane notebook, no special features but they get the job done..

there are dual core notebook in the works from intel.. if you need power.. those are good

dell has the latitude x300/x200, not sure what the new series is but its plain notebook w/o drive and you dock to one... which might be good.. long battery life with 7 hour extended one..

the t42 that i have seems well constructed and it's in the right weight range from my perspective (4-5lbs). i do still like the 700m though. the one thing to note with the 700m is that it had poor battery life in a couple of reviews. i ended up getting the extended battery, which boosted the weight up to the 4 lb range.

IBM X41T! Tablet functionality and light weight. 4 pounds with the extended battery. Or you could get the slightly weaker X40 which I think is 3 pounds with the extended battery.
Though HP has a bit better laptop/tablet(better speaker and accepts standard laptop harddrives so you can put a 7200RPM harddrive in) that's only about a pound heavier.

There's also that Dell X1 for an ultraportable.
