What's a good pair of stereo speakers for under $300?

Thinking about getting my fiancee the Sony 400-disc CD player ($260) as a wedding present. What are some good speakers for under $300? Just a pair of stereo speakers, preferably towers.

yah I still want to get the 5.1 Fluance speakers, might not be for awhile tho, she has priority 🙂 plus she's really really into music, tons of CDs.

I'm thinking there are two options right now. One, buy the Sony 400-disc CD player and the pair of Fluances. Two, buy the Sony 400-disc DVD player ($30 more) and the Fluance 5.1 set. I'd probably want a good receiver to go along with the DVD player tho. Hmm....

they're a bit higher than your budget of $300, but athena makes a very nice tower, the AS-F2. they're bright and detailed and have EXCELLENT bass response (somewhere down around 35 Hz, IIRC).

another good speaker is the JBL Studio series - there are several models.

check out the reviews on audioreview.com - they also have a search engine so you can find the highest-rated speakers under $300, etc...

good luck.

yeah, give or take a bit is fine. I don't want to buy a seperate sub, so the better the included bass, the better. thanks!

I have the Athena AS-F1s.. and then I was so thrilled with them that I also bought the Athena Audition center channel speaker. Athena makes unbelievable speakers for the price. Even Best Buy started carrying Athena, so it's pretty safe they're the only decent speakers at Best Buy.

Athenas have been reviewed by Audiophile and Sound and Vision and got rave reviews. And typically, (I have a subscription to Sound and Vision), those magazines call 'entry level bargain' speakers anything in the $1000 range.

you'll like the F2's - they not gonna have the low-end oomph that a good sub will, but there is definitely some bottom end. FWIW, if you ever DO want a good, cheap sub, take a look at the Dayton 10" (partsexpress.com). i got mine for $108 shipped and it is amazing for the price.

also, if you do audition and/or buy the athenas, remember that they need a MINIMUM of 100 hours of break in time before they really start to sound good. i've had mine for three months and they're sounding better and better every day (they were very brittle and tinny to begin with)...

PM me if i can help any more.

yes and yes. plus my dad has a ton of woodworking tools, such as a bandsaw, tablesaw, etc. it's nice having an engineer as a dad 😉 are you suggesting a build-a-speaker project? 😀

whoa dude. hold your horses.

a CD-changer for a wedding present? women don't care about electronics. i mean they might even kind of like gadgets but they don't covet them they way guys do. get her something that means something, not a gizmo. guys love those sorts of practical presents, but girls look for the emotional content of a present and if it says "sony" on it, chances are good it has zero emotional content.
