Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (one of my all time favorite series, ever. Not completed yet)

This is my vote. I don't think there is anything out there like it. The second book of the series Deadhouse Gates really sets the tone for the series.

Reading Memories of Ice right now. Wow, this series is top notch. You can really dig your teeth into these books, unlike 90% of the brainless fluff out there.

I really enjoyed the Saga of Recluce by Modesitt, Jr. The first book is in first person, but that's the only one. Sometimes he does back-to-back books, but for the most part each book is a stand-alone story set in the same world but at different times and places. I really like that, because trying to remember what happened in the first book while reading the 15th book would be difficult.

Edit: And he's still writing the series. Book 16 will be released on Jan. 5, 2010, and I just placed the first hold on it at my library. I can't wait!!!

Which? Chronicles and Legends are good but anything other than that isn't worth reading.

I second all of the following

Black Company
Malazan Book of the Fallen
Any series by Robin Hobb
Dark Tower
Chronicles of Amber
Dresden Files

Memories of Ice is great as is most of the series.
I just finished Toll the Hounds and it starts off slow but has an awesome finish. I'm eagerly awaiting books 9 and 10.

I have enjoyed every book in the Saga of Recluse series - good stuff.

Xanth is fun but it's light/humorous fantasy aimed at younger readers. The first 6 books are good, after that it goes downhill rapidly.

"A Spell for Chameleon" is one of the first books I can actually remember reading (MANY years ago).

if you read the Ender's books, get them from your library.

Orson Scott Card is insanely bigoted and borderline insane. don't support him via book royalties :p

I already have them. Like I said, I was at work and for some reason just didn't check. I didn't find out what a nutjob he was until I had already read half of them and bought the rest. Too late.

Now, why can't seem to get this foot out of my mouth... :)

So many to choose from....hmmm

Farseer trilogy + The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb

Farseer
Liveship Traders
Tawny Man

Got to read em all and they are very good. Was about to make some remark about how they are at least finished compared to Martin but looking at the wiki page she is writing another series set in the same world called The Rain Wild Chronicles and the first book Dragon Keeper will be available in the US on Jan 26. SWEET!!!

Hobb is a fantastic author. Would highly recommend any of her books to fantasy fans. Even her latest trilogy which was set in a different place is still very enjoyable, though not as omg-I-have-to-stay-up-and-read-one-more-chapter as the three above trilogies.
