There are both software alternatives to itunes and download alternatives to itunes. Personally I would'nt buy anything other than ipod just because everything is being set up to accept it's propriitary plug... Car radios...base stations etc are ipod almost exclusivly not to mention all the accesories..

Hey is the Sansa e280 UMS compatible? (Drag and Drop compatible, no software required to add music)?

All Sandisk MP3 players are UMS compatible.

Awesome. I remember that for the iRiver you had to do a 'trick' to make it UMS compatible. I guess with the sansa it just 'works'? Hmm, when they come out with a 20GB flash based sansa, I may pick one up (shouldn't take too long for that to happen).

Explain to everybody how people managed to hook up their CD player to the car's AUX before iPod came onto the scene. Or use the mini to RCA cable to hook up CD player to amps. It must be a miracle.:frown: iPod accessories? They're not compatible across iPod generations. Want to use FM tuners from your G4 iPod on your G5 iPod? Nope, can't do that. Gotta buy a new version.

I recently got a Sony Ericsson K750i that works nicely as a phone, mp3 player, and digital camera. If you don't need all that then the sandisk units are nice.

What large capacity mp3 players work with WMP11?

I'm pretty sure most high capacity mp3 players would work with WMP11 since most, if not all non-Ipods are PlayForSure compatible. My Zen Touch works with WMP11, but that's about as far as my exp. goes.

To the OP, if you plan on using this in a gym and only want 4GB, look at the Zen V.

the toshiba gigabeat s series works great with wmp11.... a FAR FAR better combo than the 5g ipod/itunes combo it replaced.

If you want features, go with the Sandisk Sansa. If you want a more basic one that has more stable software and better music quality but not the features (although it still has as many features as an ipod), go with the Samsung z5.

Either way, you'll be getting something that's cheaper and has more features than an ipod. With both of these models the battery life is about 2-3 times longer than an ipod.

I have the e260 with Rhapsody's unlimited music to go - $14/month and I can download as many songs onto my player as I want. Some unlimited music sites are cheaper, but Rhapsody has the best jazz collection.

I sold the ipod and bought me a 8GB Micro photo at target for $169 could not be happier and has batteries like a cellphone and can be swapped out ..😉

If you need video though check out the cowin IAUDIO X5 in the 30 or 60 GB flavors but they are spendy..

I like the Sandisk Sansa e260 4GB MP3 player. Similar size to the iPod nano w/ option to expand memory later using flash memory. I might get it from Costco if they sell it and give it a try.

Looks like I can store 50+ MP3 albums on the e260. That's pretty good.

RossMAN recommended
