I want to buy a bike so I can bike to work. My work is about a mile away from my home. What is the most comfortable bike to purchase? I do have a slightly up hill climb while going both to and from work. Can anyone make a recommendation for a decent bike?

What kind of price range are you looking for? I like Trek. Great bikes, tough and dependable even when you're not good at maintenance. Wide selection and price range.

If it's strictly for a one mile commute, just get something cheap as anything really nice would be a waste. However do make sure it fits you properly. And you may want to go with a cheap road bike.

Are you going to chain it up outside? If so get a cheap bike.

Buy a comfort bike then and NOT a MTB.

You might want to check out Del Sol, they are Haro's comfort bike line.

Yeah, our shop used to carry them as well.

Nice bikes, but now it seems they only make real high end stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

I'm interested in the GT bikes. Are those any good? Yes, I'd be chaining it up outside. That's the only place I'd be able to keep it. However, I can talk to the security and see if there is anyway I'd be able to store it inside.

I have an old GT mountain bike. I like it enough to get another GT although I keep drooling on the stuff at bikesdirect.com

If you have to store your commuter bike outside, then go to a thrift shop and pick one up there. You don't want to a have nice expensive bike sitting outside unattended.

Since its only a mile and on the streets any bike will work as long as it is comfortable. A mtn bike wouldnt be worht the money unless you actually do mtn bike. Road bikes can be as expensive as mtn bikes and they arent practical for your reasons. Road bikes have thin tires that may buckle or loose traction through dirt, gravel and such. So i would recommend something cheap and easy, nothing hardcore. Bike manufactures are now making hybrid bikes. Hybrids are sorta road bikes in the sense thats all they can do really. They wont take you through the trails fast, but they will keep good traction on gravel and terrain. thats what i would recommend for you. They might have shocks but they would only be good for looking at, no disc brakes, less gears, thick tires, bigger frame.
