Aikido is my favorite in terms of philosophy and execution. However, I heard it takes like 20 years to master. :(

Do a search. This has been discussed. It was asked once within the past month.

My recommendation is Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

Eh, what the hell. I'll throw my two cents in.

You are looking for long term change.

Then I would recomend staying away from Tai Kwon Do.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the style. It is just that the "Americanised," fast-food style that is usually offered is pretty much crap. My cousin took it and in 3 years was given a black belt. And I could still "win" when we sparred, and I have no formal training.

Also, just about anything that advertises "Ninjitsu" is either trying to draw in the "chop saki" flick fans, or is full of themselves.

But that is just my observations of what people I know have gone through.

Jeet Kune Do is supposed to be good... My cousin trained in it... Its more of a defense type of martial art so you learn what to expect from attackers and how to beat them.

Aikido is also pretty useless until you get to the upper stages.

I put rock. I win. You got pwned!

On a side note, this reminds me of a quote on bash.org (which is a very addicting site)... I understand that Scissors can beat Paper, and I get how Rock can beat Scissors, but there's no fvcking way Paper can beat Rock. Paper is supposed to magically "wrap around" Rock, leaving it immobile? Why the hell cant paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody... a rock would tear that sh!t up in about 2 seconds.

First learn Karate then switch over to Kung Fu

Do you know if knife defense credits transfer to Kung Fu University? Where do I get my karate transcript?

Duh. Kung Fu University has a prerequisite of knife defence - at least three credits. And you can get your Karate transcript from Sensei Splinter - he's a giant rat living in the sewers. Search around and you'll find him.

I  Sensei Splinter!

So did you decide/find a place you liked yet?

No, not yet. :(

I do Karate and Aikido at UF... and I get that for free. The club has no dues, only a few fundraisers now and then that are optional. Its cool cause I get training from a 6th degree blackbelt with 40 years experience without paying a dime.

As far as the whole discussion about guns vs martial arts... Guns aren't always loaded, and aren't always gonna work. Your in a bar with some friends and somebody starts talking crap, you can't just pull a gun in a crowded area and expect to leave without getting arrested- at the very least. A gun is immediatly going to make a situation life and death. I have to wonder if these people who are stating about "get a gun" walk around with a gun at all times.

Martial arts also has added advantages besides just fights. One of the students a few years back got in a motorcycle accident at like 60 miles an hour and flew over the handlebars of his bike. He rolled out of it when he hit the ground and escaped with just a broken hand (his hand caught the handlebar) and some bruises. Being able to move, and to know the limits of what your body can do the way martial arts teaches it will help you out with a lot more than just self-defence.

Next time! I can't believe I lost to someone who attends Western! I have shamed my fellow students at ISU . . . :(

Don't say that; useless in what sense? And have you taken all the styles of Aikido, let alone taken Aikido at all?

I'm dying to take Kali Escrima, but there are no dojos in my area. Only Shotokan karate, very defensive aikido dojos and a few watered down gung-fu places. I'm not interested in TKD or JJ at all.

Muay Thai makes the most vicious fighters around, if they're willing to put in the time and effort. The major downside is that the moves are not practical in street combat. Busting someone's jaw open with a knee strike or railing the base of ther neck with your elbow will send them to the hospital. Thass no cool.

It's like anything else. Call around, meet with as many instructors as you can. Even if you decline to study at their respective dojos, call back a few weeks later and thank them for their time, etc. When you pick a school, always be the first to arrive, and the last to leave. Always volunteer. If you kiss enough ass, and study hard enough you could see closed-door training in less than two years. That's a HUGE if, though.

Anyways, good luck.
