How old are you? Seems like older users love that sort of thing. I think it must be a holdover from their AOL and Yahoo days. If you want to read the news, why not just visit your favorite news sites?

I use the Speed Dial [FVD] extension for Chrome. It's more convenient for getting to my most frequented sites than using bookmarks.

I use about:blank, but reddit.com would give you a variety of stuff to read without a ton of js or auto loading videos.

Most of the time when I open a new tab I just want to do a search so I've always had Google, but switched to duckduckgo several years back when I found out about it.

At one point I had made myself a custom page that had the weather, and a calendar and stuff. Not sure why I stopped using it actually.... I should do that again.
