You should overclock!! You wont get anything that is substantially better within your price range.

Yep. I've had my brother's board at 275MHz HTT without problems (and with chipset passively cooled). Haven't tried higher. Other have reported that frequencies in excess of 300MHz are possible, though.

Depends on which bios version you are using!
Yeah, it was the first ones that were kind of crap, right? I flashed my brother's board with the latest one when I built his computer last year.

pshhhhh my 2600+ is at 2280ghz right now, and I paid about $55 for it :D With my 9600pro and 512MB of HyperX I can play AoE3 with most of the settings on. I haven't really tried any other higher end games yet though. Once I upgrade my GPU I should be able to play most games.

You should easily be able to overclock that 3000+ to 2.2 GHz. Even if the RAM doesn't want to go too much higher, you should be able to get 245 MHz on the CPU with a divider. I have yet to own a 512 or 1GB stick of PC3200 that wasn't good for at least 216fsb, so you should be fine. The 754 being a dead end for upgrading, you'ld be better off doing a small overclock like that, and saving your money towards a move to a better platform.

$5 power supply? How are your voltages? You shouldn't really overclock with that power supply even if it is possible.

You won't get any appreciable increase in CPU power for that price. Really you should be looking at a video card upgrade if you want to make your games faster. You need a better PSU regardless most likely.

Stretch your budget a little and get the best dang 754 chip - A64 3000+ Venice core.
OCs easily to 2.6GHz in my rig, IINM some other folks have hit 2.7 - 2.8GHz.

Long live Socket-754 :D

So, back to overclocking.

If you are really interested in overclocking I would suggest getting a 350 watt antec or something PSU, then I would get a stick of Crucial PC3500 or some better ocing RAM. If you used the FS/FT forums here you could get those for well under $100 and I would bet you could get your rig to around 2.4 ghz.

Who said it was bad? Sempron is identical to Athlon64, apart from the decreased cache amount. This usually doesn't affect performance much, but games might suffer somewhat. It's doubtful that this difference can be noticed with equally clocked A64s and Semprons. Most Semprons are clocked lower than A64, though, and that certainly doesn't help.

I can benefit from this thread too.... HOW do you overclock the 754 Sempron?

I know there's more to it than just upping the FSB - I can only get to 210MHz that way... I must need to change something else - but what?

You need to turn the RAM settings down. With my board (DFI) its the very first option in the Bios. You just turn the settings from 200 to whatever you need to get the most out of your CPU. Value RAM wont be as good for overclocking as some more exspencive RAM but I don't think you take a big preformance drop and you more then make it up with the extra CPU speed. (someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong) :)
