What's a good gaming PC brand nowadays?

What's a good gaming PC seller, who sells in the 'sweet spot' of quality and value and service?

Are there any that have only a modest markup over a build it yourself configuration?

I'd heard Cyberpower may fit that description.

I'm doubtful you will ever find a modest markup gaming pc manufacturer. You are better off building it yourself and it takes like a freaking hour. Hour Vs. paying a shit-load of money... You decide.

Why wouldn't you build a desktop yourself?

For a gaming PC, this is ideal. That way you KNOW what parts are going into it and you can dodge equipment that some third-parties skip on (like a quality PSU).

I checked out the Dell Outlet based on the advice from some people in General Hardware. Best choice I ever made. Found a scratch and dent over half off and all I had to do was pop in a new video card. Seriously, take a look at the outlet and look for the scratch & dents...

Build your own gaming PC FTW

While I build my own desktops - the ONLY way to go because you can pick every single component based on YOUR needs, not their choices - I've bought both of my laptops (an Inspiron 6000 three years ago and an XPS 1530 six months ago) as refurbs from the Dell Outlet and saved about $1500 between them. That's like a free gaming desktop!

Cyberpower sucks.

What is your budget?

If you want an OEM box, I think buying one and just replacing/adding the video card is your best bet. And it is very easy to do.

Knowing your budget would help.

The only thing to watch when buying an OEM and adding a GPU is the PSU--if you go for a very high end video card the PSU may not provide enough juice.

Not everyone has the wherewithal or inclination to build their own systems. And, if you don't properly do your homework on sourcing, etc, you can end up playing more.

If you have a local computer shop that you trust and have good relationship with, go with them.

Otherwise, the crap you get from online places are all a dime a dozen.

Knowing your budget would really be helpful. But in general, I think building your own is the way to go.

That said, I think that there is a computer being made (or at least spec'd) by EA that can run Crysis for $800. Maybe buy that or get the specs, buy the parts and build yourself.

My last four machines have been Dell outlet machines, a 4600, a 8400, a xps400 and a dimension 9200(xps 410?).

All were very cheap and the only thing ive had to do is add a video card and ram.
I'm looking at getting another newer machine (which ends up upgraded 2-3 machines at once as they get bumped down from the new one, between what I and my girlfriend currently use).

I've always told myself I'm going to build my next machine so I can overclock etc, but then I see another perfectly good upgrade machine for 400 bucks that I already have a video card for...

Build your own. You don't want them skimping on the PSU (bad PSU can cause lockups and damage parts) or your case (ie, something that looks stupid/is a bitch to work with).

I think the best thing to do is to buy a cheap deal and then just add a videocard and PSU. I did that for a compaq we got a about a year ago, worked nicely, and didn't have to worry about any problems. I understand why some people would want to avoid building a rig, I have built several machines over the years and have always had to deal with problems, with a pre-built you are getting a machine that is guaranteed to work (if it doesn't work just return it, etc.).
