Well, many gas companys will give cards to first timers, so you might start there.

Good and first time, may be an oxymoron, since the best rates, terms and limits are generally not given to new card holders.

Go to the websites of:
Providian
Capital One

Those normally will give you an unsecured line, if you are employed, and otherwise meet their criteria. They also help people who have had problems in the past get a second chance.

MBNA will increase your limit ridiculously
Blue will give you the lowest fixed rate
Capital One is not that great
Chase is not that good
First USA had a good incentive for me
Discover pisses me off
Fleet i can't remember

If you have any trouble getting a first card, then get the gas station's card. Make sure you pay it off every month though because their interest rates are normally around 20%.

Blue gave me the lowest fixed so far, although it's been matched with variable cards because of Greenspan. Be careful of variable rates though, Federal Funds Rate can't stay at 1.75% forever!

capital one has been a great card for me

Got it at 17 years old, I'm 19 now, I have a $1000 limit which should be getting raised here before long

Had one problem so far, yahoo auctions has charged me twice for something I never bought, I never go to the sight actually and capital one denied the charge without any problem and promptly gave me my money back and interest.

if you are gonna pay it off in full every month i'd go with a visa since they are accepted at the most places out of them all

VISA > MC > AE > DISC that is the order i believe

AMEX BLUE would be a great second card

DISCOVER will give cards out to anyone :)

I got a USAA mastercard (for family members of veterans) with a 10% apr and $500 limit starting, raised to $1000 recently (requested).

I filled an app in college for a Verizon card not expecting to get it and I got it with a $500 limit. a year later I have a $1700 limit and they upgraded me to their 'VISA Platinum' card. APR is like 17%

Applied/got approved for AMEX Blue a few days ago and am kind of excited about that. :)

<What card has the lowest APR? >

I have one that is only 2.x points above prime. Right now, my APR is 4.x% (I can't remember the exact decimal point).

My other cards' APR's are 8.9% and 9/9%.
