what's a good DVD ripper?

I want to rip some dvds I bought onto my laptop hardrive so I save power while I watch movies on my flight to Europe. I don't mind if it takes up to 5 gigs, as long as the quality is as if I watching it as if it's playing on the DVD drive, since it's only going to be temporarily on the HD.

What software would you recommend?

Were you planning on ripping several DVDs and taking only a total of 5gb for all? Most current DVD movies are 5+ GB in size, and you'll need to use a program like DVD Shrink if you want to compress the movies so they take less space.

Another vote for DVD Decrypter. Rips the DVD to .VOB format which you can watch in your DVD player software.

Cool thanks for the suggestion, I have it downloaded and will try it out this evening- gotta do a test and let a dvd run to see just how much battery a full dvd will take.

BlueWeasel, I was making an estimate that a single dvd movie can take as much as 5 gigs, so for an 8 hour flight I'm planning to put 4 movies, even thought the most likely scenario is I'll watch 1 or 2 and spend the rest of the time reading or doing somethign else on my laptop like programming or playing a game...


But about this decrypter software, what mode should I rip the dvd in? File ? I'd like a format which my PowerDVD software which came with my Dell laptop would recognize it and run it off HD.

I'd rip it in IFO mode with streaming enabled. Select the PGC file that corresponds with the length of the movie, and remove the audio/subtitles that you don't need. This way you're not ripping the menus or extra features, just the main movie.

PowerDVD won't have any problem reading the .VOB files ripped this way.

DVDShrink 3.1.7. It's great, and will do exactly what you want and allow you to set how much you would like to compress it.
